SOU ends season w/ heartbreaking loss to Whitman in the PNCLL semi's 11-8

SOU travelled to Curtis HS to take on Whitman College on Saturday in the PNCLL semi-finals.  We dug ourselves a hole to start the game down 5-1 just halfway through the 1st qt. which we could not overcome.  The ball just bounced to Whitmans' favor .  Their first goal came off of a nice dodge from X but we had our first and 2nd slides ready, unfortunately our 2nd slide checked the ball out of the stick of the Whitman player and it bounced right to #3 for Whitman in front of the cage for an easy goal.  The day would continue to go this way.  We locked down on defense and only allowed 1 more goal for the remaining 22 minutes of the first half.  Sr. captain #20 Alex White really came to play and kept SOU in the game scoring 3 of our 4 first half goals and 5 of our 8 overall.  The score was 6-4 at the half.

Whitman came out fast again in the 2nd half scoring just 2 minutes in to take a 7-4 lead.  Our riding game was effective today but our clearing game was suspect at best.  We reverted to ways seen earlier in the season where we rushed clears and threw the ball away often which really hurt us.  At the end of 3 the score was 9-6 in favor of Whitman.

The ball continued to bounce against us as Alex White hit two posts in a row on good looks at the cage.  We then missed a 1:1 opportunity w/ Whitmans' goalie shooting the ball wide.  In the end Whitmans' smaller, faster attack men proved to be a matchup that we could not handle w/ our bigger defense men .  Both teams added 2 goals in the 4th to make the final 11-8 in favor of Whitman.

SOU ends the season w/ our best record ever of 13-2.  Hats off to Whitman for a great game!

Also a special thanks to our two Seniors #20 Alex White and #29 Zach Baumann.  Alex had a phenomenal 4 years scoring 236 points to make him SOU's All-Time Leading Scorer.  #29 Zach Baumann was the player that every coach wishes they had but most don't.  Zach played every position during his 4 years w/ SOU and did very well at all of them.  Thanks to both of you!
