Starting off the season vs. your in-state rivals, the defending PNCLL Champs, and a team ranked as high as #10 in the Nation, is no easy task.    This years team of SOU Lacrosse was ready for the challenge on Saturday as we travelled up to Monmouth, OR to take on the wolves.

This game was everything that you'd expect from a rivalry game, very physical, intense, and decided in the final minutes of the 4th quarter.

We started out playing almost 6 minutes of defense straight as WOU won the opening face-off and displayed a patient offense.  Fortunately for us Sr. Captain #29 Zach Baumann has really studied his new role as a goalie.  Zach made 5 saves in the first minutes of the game that were extremely huge.

The first 3 times that we did get the ball we turned it over or forced a pass causing a turnover.

On our fourth possession Sr. Captain #20 Alex White took WOU's top defender, and first team PNCLL player, #33 Justin Brown to the cage for a nice high-to-low finish on the inside 7 and 1/2 minutes into the game to take the lead 1-0.

SOU followed that up w/ an EMO goal by Jr. Captain #6 "Bubba" Van Egdom with the assist coming from A. White.  2-0 SOU.

Jr. Tyler Baumann scored un-assisted just 27 seconds later to make it 3-0 SOU.

Over the next 12 minutes SOU would build our lead to 6-1 w/ goals from A. White, T. Baumann, and So. #3 Stephen Davenport, to lead 6-1.

WOU did not give up and was able to cut the lead to 6-3 at the half.  The second half started out slowly until WOU scored half-way through the 3rd to make it 6-4.  WOU's #2 followed that up w/ a quick split dodge up top cutting our lead to 1, 6-5.  T. Baumann scored again for SOU to put the lead back to two but WOU scored w/ 40 seconds left in the third to make it 7-6 going into the fourth.

WOU tied the game at 7, just 2 and 1/2 minutes into the 4th, when the last years leading scorer in the PNCLL #10 Calvin Davis got his first point of the game on an EMO play for WOU.

SOU Sophmore middie #14 Nate Gregg led a crucial fast break dishing the ball off to freshman midfield #15 Forrest Brooks who scored to give SOU the lead back just 90 seconds later..8-7 SOU.

WOU answered 75 seconds later to tie the game at 8.  The game remained tied until there was five minutes to go.  That's when So. captain #11 Sean "Lump" McQuown scored his only goal of the game which proved to be the difference.

#15 F. Brooks added one more for SOU w/ 2:01 remaining in the game to seal the victory 10-8 SOU.

SOU was led by #29 Z. Baumann in goal who had 13 saves in the first half and 19 overall.  SOU was also led by #6  Bubba Van Egdom who won 8 of the first 12 face-offs against WOU's 2nd team All-American f/o guy #2 Ian Bohince.   So. #18 Jack Pfeifer played very well for us holding the returning PNCLL's leading scorer Calvin Davis withtout a point until the fourth.  Freshman played a huge role for SOU as freshman midfielder #15 Forest Brooks scored 2 of our final 3 goals.  Freshman LSM #42 Joey Moseanko had a huge game collecting 10+ GB's while clearing the ball well.  Freshman Defender Matt Kegel was solid all day on close- D especially w/ crucial slides.  Veteran leadership proved to be the difference as Sr. A. White and Jr. T. Baumann got us the early lead that really made the difference in the game.

This game marks the biggest win in SOU history as Western Oregon came into the game ranked #10 in the Nation by Lacrosse Magazine, #11 by MCLA the LAX MAG, and #16 by the collegelax.us coaches poll.  Our highest win vs. a ranked opponent until now was against #18 PLU in 2006.

This game, as our entire season will be, is dedicated to our lost teammate #43 Scott Charlson who died in a helicopter crash last fall fighting the wild fires in CA.

Here's to you Scotty!!!!!
