SOU Announces 2009 Schedule

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Nov. 21, 2008

SOU has finalized their schedule for the upcoming 2009 season.

SOU travels to play their rivals of Western Oregon for the opening game of the season on Saturday Febuary 7th.  SOU and WOU both joined the PNCLL in 2005 and have become rivals since then with both teams defeating the other 3 times.  This should be quite a game to kick off the PNCLL D2 2009 season.

Next up is College of Idaho coming to Ashland for another divisional match-up on 2/21.  D2 PNCLL play-offs this year will be determined by our 4 divisional games so each game is extremely important including this one.  SOU looks to defend their house.

The following day we will host an independent team in Humboldt St.  Last year was the fist ever meeting b/w SOU and CSU-H.  SOU won the game by the score of 24-3 but after playing Humboldt this fall we know it will be a battle.

Reno, NV, is the next destination for the SOU team as we will play WCLL D1 Nevada on Friday 2/27 at 8pm.  Last year was the only regular season meeting b/w the two teams as Nevada came to Ashland in a game they won 10-8.  SOU will look to even the score.

The next day we play WCLL D2 new-comer UC-Merced in Reno.  This will be the first ever meeting b/w the two teams so we'll see what happens.

PNCLL North Division teams then head to Ashland on 3/7 and 3/8 as SOU takes on Pacific Lutheran Univ. (PLU) followed by the Univ. of Puget Sound (UPS).  SOU has never lost to PLU and possibly our biggest win in program history came against the Lutes in our 2nd year when they were ranked in the top 20 in the nation.  We won that game by a goal scored w/ 6 seconds left in the game which put SOU on the map.  Last year we defeated PLU 15-3 but expect a much closer game this year.

UPS was one of the top teams in the PNCLL last year as they earned a first round bye in the league playoffs.  SOU played UPS in the first w/e of Feb. last year in a game that we would like to forget.  With 33 penalities called in the game, 20 on SOU, 13 for UPS, UPS defeated us by the score of 5-3.  We will look to even the score on 3/8 in Ashland.

CSU-Fullerton than travels to Salem, OR to take on Willamette Univ. followed by SOU on 3/15.  This will mark the first meeting ever b/w the two teams.  CSU-F had a solid season last year and did not lose any major players so it should be quite a battle.

Spring Break calls as SOU heads to Santa Cruz, CA to play UCSC and Cal-Maritime.  Santa Cruz is the defending WCLL D2 champions and they surprised some people at the national tournament w/ their play.  Losing no major contributors to their team means SOU will have their hands full.

UC-Maritime is an independent team which we have never played and know nothing about....it should be interesting.

We end our Spring Break at WCLL D1 San Jose St on Tuesday 3/24.  Last year was the first meeting b/w the two teams and we won 12-2 in Ashland.  SJSU will surely be looking to get some revenge.   One thing is for sure, this will be a very physical game.

SOU returns home to host Dominican Univ., which will be a NCAA sanctioned team in 2010, on 4/10.  SOU has played Dominican twice, winning the first match-up convincingly, only to lose in 2OT in 2007.  This may very well be the best team that we face all season.

The following day is another crucial PNCLL D2 league matchup vs. the Univ. of Portland.  The two teams have never met as this is U of P's first year in the PNCLL.  We are glad this game will be at home.

SOU wraps up our regular season in Salem, OR against Willamette Univ.  Although we have never lost to Willamette we know this year will be the best of WU that we've seen.  WU coach Will Patton was the PNCLL D2 Coach of the Year and has the Bearcats going in the right direction.  This game will certainly have major play-off implications.

The SOU Raider-Hawks can't wait to get this year started!!!  Every game will be dedicated to our lost member #43 Scott Charlson.  You won't be forgotten Scotty!!!
