#12 UC-Santa Cruz Defeats SOU 10-5Mar. 30, 2019 Ashland, OR- SOU hosted the #12 team in the Nation Friday afternoon as the Banana Slugs from Santa Cruz came to Southern Oregon. For the 2nd game in a row SOU started out very slow digging a 3-0 hole in the 1st qt. The SOU defense clamped down after the slow start not allowing a goal for over 20 minutes and SOU got on the board half way through the 2nd to cut the lead to 3-1. Santa Cruz's only goal of the 2nd qt came with just 12 seconds to go in the half on a failed clear by SOU. UCSC led 4-1 at the half. SOU would cut the lead to 2 just 2 1/2 minutes into the 2nd half but Santa Cruz answered just 19 seconds later to push the lead to 5-2. SOU answered 4 minutes later and the defense kept Santa Cruz off the board for 10 minutes putting the score at 6-3 going into the final qt. In the 4th Santa Cruz scored just one minute in to extend their lead followed by an EMO goal 3 minutes later. SOU didn't quit and scored the next two to cut the lead to 8-5. The Raiders showed a ton of heart and effort but simply ran out of gas as the 13 man roster wasn't enough. Santa Cruz tacked on 2 more goals late in the 4th to win 10-5. Bright spots for the Raiders included their Sophomore Goalie #24 Cameron Saechao who kept the Raiders in the game with 20 saves on the day. Team defense overall was solid holding off the potent Santa Cruz offense for two long stretches of 20 minutes and 10 minutes. The Raiders matched UCSC scoring in the 2nd and 3rd qts making it obvious that the Raiders can play with a team ranked that high. Figuring out how to eliminate the slow starts will be key for the Raiders moving forward. Next up for the Raiders is their 2nd PNCLL South Divsional game as they host #8 College of Idaho on Sunday at noon.
