UC-Santa Cruz 20 Raiders 4...Number of Subs That Is. Raiders Win 9-8 in Double OTFeb. 22, 2016 SOU headed down to Santa Cruz for their 4th straight road game in California on Sunday. Due to player injuries the Raiders were severely outnumbered by the Banana Slugs but that wouldn't stop the Raiders from remaining undefeated on the season. SOU tallied the only goal in the first qt. on a dodge by Sr. Captain #57 Ian Wilborn. SOU's Man Down Defense was stifling again going 7/8 on the day and holding the Slugs to just 2 shots on a 2 minute non-releasable penalty in the first qt. Sr. Goalie #14 Connor Kelley was on fire allowing only one goal in the first half while tallying 10 saves in the half. The Raiders put in two more goals in the 2nd as #4 Ari Feldman made a nice back door cut against the aggressive Slug defense finishing the feed from #22 David Mungeam. #22 dished out another assist this time to #29 Spencer Pregal to make the score 3-1 at the half in favor of the Raiders. SOU found themselves Man Down again but it didn't matter as # 4 Feldman split a double team and scored. Santa Cruz answered with their only Man Up goal of the game, followed by 2 more goals to tie the game at 4. #22 stopped the bleeding for SOU as Wilborn found him open inside the Slugs Defense. #22 Mungeam started the Raiders off in the 4th qt. with another goal only to be answered by the Slugs making the game 6-5. Goalie #14 Connor Kelley ran 20 yards to make a 40 yard pass to #20 Scott Comer who buried the goal, rocking the cage. Kelley almost got the assist but this isn't Hockey. The Slugs would not go away and went on a 3-0 run to take the lead 8-7 with just minutes to go in the game. The Raiders were fortunate that Santa Cruz took a timeout with the ball with just 54 seconds to go in the game, this allowed the Raiders to set up a double team. #23 Captain LSM Taylor Harrison and #31 Captain Killian Spicer-Torreblanca were able to take the ball away from the slugs, push a fast break, and #29 Pregal found #22 for his 3rd goal of the game w/ under 30 seconds to go. The Raiders looked to end the game as #23 Harrison pushed the ball off of the ensuing face-off only to have the Slugs Goalie make a great save sending the game into OT. Neither team could capatilize in the first OT although both teams had their chances. After a defensive stand by the Raiders to start the 2nd OT they called time out with the ball on offense. From there #4 Ari Feldman would not be denied as he took a dodge from X and scored the game winner. This was only the 2nd Double OT game the Raiders have ever been in. #4 Feldman displayed maturity as he was given the game ball and instantly stated that it was a Team Game Ball. The Raiders improve to 5-0 on the season with 4 straight road wins in California. Up next for the Road Warrior Raiders are two games in Portland against Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Puget Sound next Saturday and Sunday.
