SOU Hands St. Mary's Their First LossFeb. 23, 2014 SOU Men's Lacrosse took on the St. Mary's Gaels on Saturday in Redding, CA. Both teams entered the game undefeated on the season, only SOU remained that way after a convincing 11-4 victory. The game started out tightly contested w/ SOU up 3-2 after the first qt. SMC tied the game at 3 midway through the 2nd period. From there SOU's defense took over holding the Gaels scoreless for almost 30 minutes while going on a 6-0 run leading 9-3 early in the 4th qt. SMC answered w/ a goal, which would be their last, making the score 9-4. SOU added 2 more to make the final 11-4. SOU was led by Sr. Captain #44 Justin Cooper on Defense who locked down SMC's leading scorer for the majority of the game. Cooper also scored 3 goals of his own in transition, and got a hockey assist leading a fast break. Sophmore Goalie #14 Connor Kelley only allowed 4 goals while tallying 9 saves. Sr. Nick Perry #22 dished out a career high 4 assists while the 4 SOU attack men available to play the game scored 8 goals. The game was very physical, fast, and fun for the fans in attendance, which were many as Redding, CA was hosting a w/e long Lax Jamboree w/ over 30 teams competing. Next up for SOU are a pair of home games starting this Saturday 3/1 at 3pm vs. the defending WCLL Champion UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. Sunday SOU takes on the University of Nevada Wolf Pack at 2pm. Nevada is coming off an impressive win vs. Div. 1 UNLV. Both games will be played at SOU Raider Stadium weather permitting. If it has been raining the games will be held on the practice fields adjacent to SOU Stadium. Admission is free so come out and support your RaiderHawks!!
