#21 SOU Wins Two League Games on the Road - Apr 17, 2014

The SOU Men's Lacrosse Team qualified for the playoffs by defeating College of Idaho and Whitman College this past weekend. 

SOU travelled to Caldwell, ID defeating the College of Idaho 15-3.  SOU was led by Sr. Captain #13 Tom Halley who delivered a 10 point game scoring 5 goals and dishing out 5 assists.   SOU's defense was led by Sophmore Goalie #14 Connor Kelley who tallied 16 saves while only letting in 3 goals.  The entire defense played well holding 2 of the Yotes top 3 scorers without a goal.  The score was 11-2 at the half.  Game ball went to Jr. #18 AJ Chase who tallied 4 goals, 1 assist, 2 GB's and rode like a mad man causing 4 turnovers.

On Sunday Whitman College hosted SOU.  The game was very physical and full of penality's.  SOU played man down for 7 minutes of the first half, 9 and half minutes total.  SOU's Man Down Defense was solid only allowing 1 goal on 9 attempts.  The defense was led by Sr. Defenseman #9 Matt Kegel who caused 8 turnovers and grabbed 8 Ground balls.  Sophmore Goalie #39 Josh Barnhart recorded 11 saves against 3 goals.  Game ball went to Jr. Attack #17 Spencer Nix who tallied 4g and 1a. 

Next up for the Raiders is the final regular season game which will decide the PNCLL South Champions as Western Oregon comes to town.  WOU comes into Ashland undefeated and ranked #7 in the Nation.  The game will be held in Raider Stadium at 1pm on Saturday.  Admission is free so come out and support your RaiderHawks!!

SOU Improves to 7-1 on Season - Mar 16, 2014

SOU took on two PNCLL North Teams this w/e at Delta Park in Portland, OR.  SOU defeated Central Washington Univ. on Saturday 12-2.  SOU then defeated Pacific Lutheran Univ. on Sunday 19-2.

Thanks to both teams for meeting us at a neutral location and playing with class.

Next up for the RaiderHawks are Finals this week.  Time to excel in the classroom and get the grades which matter way more than LAX!!

SOU then hits the road to CA for three games over Spring Break vs Pacific Univ., Occidental, and UC-San Diego. 

 

#25 SOU Fights Back to Defeat #20 Portland 13-11 - Mar 10, 2014

SOU took on the 20th ranked Portland Pilots in Portland on Saturday.  UP struck first early in the first period, #11 Alex Smith answered to tie the game at 1-1.  SOU took the lead as #18 AJ Chase found #13 Tom Halley off of a set play for the Raiders.  Portland answered right away tying the game at 2-2.  SOU would then score 4 in a row with goals by #88 Casey Liebler, #11 Smith, Defenseman #44 Justin Cooper, and #13 Halley again.  Portland then began a run of their own w/ 2 in the first making the score 6-4 after one.  Portland would start the 2nd period with 4 more goals before #11 Smith answered for the Raiders.  Portland added one more just as the half was ending to take a 9-7 lead into the break.  SOU's Defense stepped up in the 3rd only allowing 1 goal while #18 Chase put one in for the Raiders making it 10-8 going into the final qt.  #57 Ian Wilborn scored two in a row for the Raiders to tie the game at 10-10.  SOU took the lead on an EMO play as #57 Wilborn fed #26 Scott Murphy.  Porltand tied the game back up at 11-11 on a fast break with just 4 minutes to go.  SOU answered with a fast break of their own as Sr. Defenseman #9 found an open #42 Zach Hess who scored on his only shot of the game.  #13 Halley sealed the win on a feed from #18 Chase making the final 13-11. 

Game ball went to Sophmore #11 Alex Smith who won 11-21 face-offs, collected 10 ground balls, caused 2 turnovers, and scored 3 goals!!

Thanks for hosting Portland.  What a battle!

Next up for the RaiderHawks are two more games in Portland; Saturday vs. Central Washington University 1pm, Sunday vs. Pacific Lutheran Univ. at noon, both games will be played at Delta Park. 

 

Nevada Hands SOU First Loss of the Season - Mar 4, 2014

Nevada defeated SOU 7-3 on Sunday.  The game was tightly contested and a defensive battle for the majority of the game.  UNR led 2-1 after the 1st, 3-2 at the half, 4-2 after 3.  SOU cut the lead to 1 at 4-3 early in the 4th.  UNR answered w/ 2 goals in transition and one on EMO to end the game 7-3. SOU couldn't get their offense going against the Wolfpack.  SOU did have some bright spots as Freshman LSM #23 Taylor Harrison collected 13 GB's while forcing multiple turnovers.  The Raiders Defense caused 22 turnovers in all.  Sophmore Goalie #11 Conner Kelley recorded 14 saves vs. 7 goals against.

Next up for SOU is a road game at the University of Portland Saturday at 1pm. 

 

SOU Moves to 4-0 Defeating UC-Santa Cruz 14-4 - Mar 3, 2014

The game started off tightly contested with a tie game at the end of the 1st 1-1.  UCSC started the 2nd up two men and scored to take their only lead in the game 2-1.  From that point on it was all SOU as the Raiders Defense held UCSC off the scoreboard for the next 30+ minutes.  SOU went on a 12-0 run during that time.  SOU finished with 10 goal scorers including #11 Alex Smith's first two goals of his career, Defense Men #9 Matt Kegel's first career goal, and #23 Taylor Harrison's first career assist. 

Game ball went to Sophmore Goalie #37 Josh Barnhart who faced 41 shots, recorded 18 saves, and only allowed 4 goals.

 

SOU Hands St. Mary's Their First Loss - Feb 23, 2014

SOU Men's Lacrosse took on the St. Mary's Gaels on Saturday in Redding, CA.  Both teams entered the game undefeated on the season, only SOU remained that way after a convincing 11-4 victory.  The game started out tightly contested w/ SOU up 3-2 after the first qt.  SMC tied the game at 3 midway through the 2nd period.  From there SOU's defense took over holding the Gaels scoreless for almost 30 minutes while going on a 6-0 run leading 9-3 early in the 4th qt.  SMC answered w/ a goal, which would be their last, making the score 9-4.  SOU added 2 more to make the final 11-4.  SOU was led by Sr. Captain #44 Justin Cooper on Defense who locked down SMC's leading scorer for the majority of the game.  Cooper also scored 3 goals of his own in transition, and got a hockey assist leading a fast break.  Sophmore Goalie #14 Connor Kelley only allowed 4 goals while tallying 9 saves.  Sr. Nick Perry #22 dished out a career high 4 assists while the 4 SOU attack men available to play the game scored 8 goals.  The game was very physical, fast, and fun for the fans in attendance, which were many as Redding, CA was hosting a w/e long Lax Jamboree w/ over 30 teams competing. 

Next up for SOU are a pair of home games starting this Saturday 3/1 at 3pm vs. the defending WCLL Champion UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.  Sunday SOU takes on the University of Nevada Wolf Pack at 2pm. Nevada is coming off an impressive win vs. Div. 1 UNLV.   Both games will be played at SOU Raider Stadium weather permitting.  If it has been raining the games will be held on the practice fields adjacent to SOU Stadium.  Admission is free so come out and support your RaiderHawks!!
