#25 SOU Fights Back to Defeat #20 Portland 13-11 - Mar 10, 2014
SOU took on the 20th ranked Portland Pilots in Portland on Saturday. UP struck first early in the first period, #11 Alex Smith answered to tie the game at 1-1. SOU took the lead as #18 AJ Chase found #13 Tom Halley off of a set play for the Raiders. Portland answered right away tying the game at 2-2. SOU would then score 4 in a row with goals by #88 Casey Liebler, #11 Smith, Defenseman #44 Justin Cooper, and #13 Halley again. Portland then began a run of their own w/ 2 in the first making the score 6-4 after one. Portland would start the 2nd period with 4 more goals before #11 Smith answered for the Raiders. Portland added one more just as the half was ending to take a 9-7 lead into the break. SOU's Defense stepped up in the 3rd only allowing 1 goal while #18 Chase put one in for the Raiders making it 10-8 going into the final qt. #57 Ian Wilborn scored two in a row for the Raiders to tie the game at 10-10. SOU took the lead on an EMO play as #57 Wilborn fed #26 Scott Murphy. Porltand tied the game back up at 11-11 on a fast break with just 4 minutes to go. SOU answered with a fast break of their own as Sr. Defenseman #9 found an open #42 Zach Hess who scored on his only shot of the game. #13 Halley sealed the win on a feed from #18 Chase making the final 13-11.
Game ball went to Sophmore #11 Alex Smith who won 11-21 face-offs, collected 10 ground balls, caused 2 turnovers, and scored 3 goals!!

Nevada Hands SOU First Loss of the Season - Mar 4, 2014
Nevada defeated SOU 7-3 on Sunday. The game was tightly contested and a defensive battle for the majority of the game. UNR led 2-1 after the 1st, 3-2 at the half, 4-2 after 3. SOU cut the lead to 1 at 4-3 early in the 4th. UNR answered w/ 2 goals in transition and one on EMO to end the game 7-3. SOU couldn't get their offense going against the Wolfpack. SOU did have some bright spots as Freshman LSM #23 Taylor Harrison collected 13 GB's while forcing multiple turnovers. The Raiders Defense caused 22 turnovers in all. Sophmore Goalie #11 Conner Kelley recorded 14 saves vs. 7 goals against.
Next up for SOU is a road game at the University of Portland Saturday at 1pm.
SOU Moves to 4-0 Defeating UC-Santa Cruz 14-4 - Mar 3, 2014
The game started off tightly contested with a tie game at the end of the 1st 1-1. UCSC started the 2nd up two men and scored to take their only lead in the game 2-1. From that point on it was all SOU as the Raiders Defense held UCSC off the scoreboard for the next 30+ minutes. SOU went on a 12-0 run during that time. SOU finished with 10 goal scorers including #11 Alex Smith's first two goals of his career, Defense Men #9 Matt Kegel's first career goal, and #23 Taylor Harrison's first career assist.
Game ball went to Sophmore Goalie #37 Josh Barnhart who faced 41 shots, recorded 18 saves, and only allowed 4 goals.
SOU Hands St. Mary's Their First Loss - Feb 23, 2014
SOU Men's Lacrosse took on the St. Mary's Gaels on Saturday in Redding, CA. Both teams entered the game undefeated on the season, only SOU remained that way after a convincing 11-4 victory. The game started out tightly contested w/ SOU up 3-2 after the first qt. SMC tied the game at 3 midway through the 2nd period. From there SOU's defense took over holding the Gaels scoreless for almost 30 minutes while going on a 6-0 run leading 9-3 early in the 4th qt. SMC answered w/ a goal, which would be their last, making the score 9-4. SOU added 2 more to make the final 11-4. SOU was led by Sr. Captain #44 Justin Cooper on Defense who locked down SMC's leading scorer for the majority of the game. Cooper also scored 3 goals of his own in transition, and got a hockey assist leading a fast break. Sophmore Goalie #14 Connor Kelley only allowed 4 goals while tallying 9 saves. Sr. Nick Perry #22 dished out a career high 4 assists while the 4 SOU attack men available to play the game scored 8 goals. The game was very physical, fast, and fun for the fans in attendance, which were many as Redding, CA was hosting a w/e long Lax Jamboree w/ over 30 teams competing.
Next up for SOU are a pair of home games starting this Saturday 3/1 at 3pm vs. the defending WCLL Champion UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. Sunday SOU takes on the University of Nevada Wolf Pack at 2pm. Nevada is coming off an impressive win vs. Div. 1 UNLV. Both games will be played at SOU Raider Stadium weather permitting. If it has been raining the games will be held on the practice fields adjacent to SOU Stadium. Admission is free so come out and support your RaiderHawks!!
SOU Defeats Portland St. 12-3 - Feb 17, 2014
SOU improved to 2-0 on the season defeating Division 1 Portland St. on Saturday in Ashland. PSU was outmanned with only 12 guys available to play but they played smart and physical. The game was heavy with penalities, SOU w/ 11 for 9 minutes, PSU w/ 9 for 8 minutes. SOU again had a balanced offense w/ 8 players scoring our 12 goals led by Spencer Nix w/ 3. Our defense caused 22 PSU turnovers led by Freshman LSM Taylor Harrison and Senior Attack Tom Halley both causing 5 turnovers. Game ball went to Freshman Harley Humphrey who scored his first career goal, dished out 2 assists, caused 3 turnovers, and grabbed 4 ground balls.
Next up for the RaiderHawks are the Gaels from St. Mary's College in Redding, CA at 7pm.
SOU Wins Season Opener On the Road - Feb 10, 2014
SOU Men's Lacrosse defeated #26 Humboldt St. on the road 15-11 to open the season.
SOU was led by Sr. #13 Tom Halley who scored 5 goals while dishing out 3 assists. Sophmore #11 Alex Smith dominated the Face-Off X winning 25/29. SOU had 8 players score their 15 goals demonstrating a well balanced offense. The game was penalty ridden w/ over 19 minutes of penality's split almost evenly b/w the two teams. Sophmore Scott Murphy tallied 5 points scoring 2 goals and 3 assists. Freshman LSM Taylor Harrison collected 13 groundballs, caused 4 turnovers, and played excellent defense. Game ball went to Sophmore #57 Ian Wilborn who beat his older brother at the face off X to start the game and then tallied 5 points via 3 goals and 2 assists.
As always Humboldt was physical, well coached, and good sports. Thanks for hosting and keeping this rivalry going.
Next up for the RaiderHawks is a home game vs. Portland St. on Sunday 2/16 at noon. Weather permitting the game will be played in Raider Stadium. If not, the game will be played on the adjacent practice fields.
SOU Men's Lacrosse team is extremely pleased to announce the addition of Paul Doty to the Coaching staff for the 2013-2014 season.
Coach Doty was the Head Lax Coach for UNC from the Fall of 1973- Spring of 1978. While at the helm of the Tar Heels Coach Doty led UNC from a national ranking of 50th to #5 in the Nation and two consecutive top 10 seasons. Coach Doty also led UNC to their first two ever NCAA Tournament appearances and their first ever win against ACC foe UVA.
Coach Doty coached the 1975 South team for the annual North South game.
As a player at Denison University Coach Doty was a two-time All American Attack; 3rd team in '67 and 1st team in '68. Coach Doty still holds Denison's single season assist record with 46 and 10 in one game while remaining #2 in Denison's all time scoring leader.
Coach Doty was named to Denison's All-Decade Team of the 60's and to their 60th Anniversary Team.
