Broncos Hammer Sonoma

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Feb. 7, 2010

The Broncos loaded their goals, tables, water buckets into a truck and went mobile Saturday night as they headed south to Morgan Hill Sports Complex to get their game in.  Santa Clara's home field remains water-logged after nearly three weeks of rain on the West Coast.  The poor field conditions prevented the Broncos from hosting the visiting Sonoma State Sea Wolves on their home turf.

The Broncos started strong against the Sea Wolves scoring the first twelve goals of the contest to take a 12-0 lead until Sonoma scored its first goal of the game with nine seconds remaining in the half.  The Broncos kept constant pressure on the ball as Sonoma tried to clear the ball through the midfield.  However, the Bronco ride continually forced turnovers in transition to give Santa Clara plenty of transition opportunities.

After a 13-1 halftime lead, the Broncos continued their scoring into the second half as they again scored the first 6 goals of the half to hold a 19-1 lead and eventual 20-3 win.  Notable performances were freshman Eloise Callander scoring her first two goals of her career, freshman Mayan Zeitlin ripping a top-corner shot on Sonoma's goalie and sophomore rookie goalie Lauren Orlando recording her first three career saves in cage.

It was a great night for the Broncos overall.  They now travel south to Santa Barbara this Friday for the annual Santa Barbara Shootout.  The Broncos will face the Univ. of Pittsburgh Friday night and then follow with Arizona State, Georgia and Colorado State throughout the weekend.
