Broncos Beat the Bears in Season OpenerJan. 30, 2010 Santa Clara traveled to Cal Berkeley on a rainy Friday night for their first game of the season. The Broncos started the game slow with poor shooting and an unfocused defense. An impressive Bears goalie, Devon Combe, saved 7 of the first 8 Bronco shots on cage thereby allowing the Bears enough time to take a 3-1 lead early in the game. With the Bears still leading 4-2, junior Gracie Binder scored on an assist by sophomore Maria Pestana. After Binder's goal the Broncos would soon settle down, scoring the next three goals going into halftime thereby leading 5-4 at the break. With three straight goals scored prior to half, the Broncos added the first six goals of the second half to make it a 9-0 unanswered scoring run that went late into the game. Freshman Mayan Zeitlin scored her first goal of the season and the final goal of the night for the Broncos for a 14-4 lead. Cal would answer the Broncos scoring with three goals of their own to finish out the game. The final score of the game was 14-7. Binder led the Bronco's in scoring with 5g-1a. The Broncos will come back to UC Berkeley on Sunday for five 25 minute scrimmages versus Chico State, UC Davis and BayLax's post-collegiate club teams. Santa Clara's next official game will be their home opener versus division opponent Sonoma State next Saturday. Follow in-game scoring updates for the Broncos this season on Twitter.
