A Good Weekend In ArizonaFeb. 19, 2007 Coming off a weekend in Los Angeles that got the Broncos off to a 2-0 start to their season, Santa Clara embarked on their second road trip in consecutive weeks as they traveled south to the annual Cactus Classic Tournament, hosted by Arizona State University. The Broncos put together a spectacular weekend by winning all four of their games to improve to a perfect 6-0 record. Santa Clara's first game of the tournament was held under the lights on Friday night versus ASU. After a delay while traveling to Arizona, the Broncos arrived shortly before the game, rushed but ready. The game started off with the Broncos scoring 10 unanswered goals in the first half alone and not allowing a single shot on goal until the second half. The Broncos would dominate possession by winning the overall ground ball war by 40-11. Final score in the contest was 16-4. On Saturday, Santa Clara played their second game in as many days against the University of Arizona. After a slow start, 5-3 at half, Santa Clara took total control of the second half by outscoring the Wildcats by a 10-1 margin. Strong performances by freshman Krista Shaw (Denver, CO) and Claire O'Leary (Del Mar, CA) aided the Broncos strong performance in transition during the second half. Shaw earned game ball honors at the end of Saturday's game. Final score of the contest was 15-4. Sunday's games would tell an entirely different story than the previous two games of the tournament where the Broncos won by scoring 30+ goals in two games. Santa Clara was scheduled to face off against WCLL opponent Michigan State in the morning and RMWLL opponent Colorado State later that afternoon. Behind strong the defensive performances of sophomore Sarah Herscovici (Centennial, CO), Margaux Chan (Seattle, WA) and freshman Jamie Staudt (Lake Bluff, IL) the Broncos only gave up one settled defense goal versus Michigan State in a 10-6 victory. The Broncos had a short break between games before they would go up against Colorado State in their final game of the tournament. Santa Clara started strong by out-doing the Rams in shots, ground balls and draws in the first half to take 6-2 lead. With roughly 6 minutes left in the half, costly turnovers by the Broncos would nearly cost them the game as Colorado State mounted a comeback to make it a one goal final at the end of regulation, 7-6. The Broncos improve to an overall 6-0 record and will look to face off against UC Santa Barbara in their home opener on March 3rd. Weekend Box Scores: Note: The first WDIA Poll of the season is do out later this Wednesday, February 21st. Polls will be released weekly thereafter.
