Broncos 2-0 to Start Season
In their second game of the day, Santa Clara traveled to USC to play their first night game of the season. The Broncos opened the contest scoring on a free position shot by freshman Jenna Choquette (North Kingstown, RI) with just over 5 minutes into the game. Junior Catherine Erker (St. Louis, MO) would follow a minute later by scoring her first goal of the season to put the Broncos ahead 2-0. USC's speedy midfield attack countered the Broncos first punch by scoring the next 4 goals to take a 4-2 lead. In a punch, counter-punch game the Broncos answered USC's 4 straight with four straight of their own, to take a 6-4 lead going into the half. In the second half, led behind strong goalkeeping by senior Clair Metcalfe (Carlsbad, CA) who had 14 saves in the game (70% svp), the Broncos finished the evening off with a 9-6 victory over the Trojans. The Broncos improve to 2-0 while USC drops to 0-2. Next up, the Broncos travel to Arizona State to play in the annual Cactus Classic Tournament beginning next Friday night at 7:00pm. The Broncos will face Arizona State, University of Arizona, Michigan State and Colorado State during the course of the tournament.
