Broncos Defeat Waves in Season Opener
Santa Clara opened their 2007 regular season in Malibu, CA versus WCC rival Pepperdine University. Regardless of what the weather report might have called for during the week prior to the game, the rain stayed away and the skies stayed blue which allowed for a spectacular field view atop Pepperdine's home field overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Junior, Lindsay Campbell (Darien, CT/Darien HS) led the Broncos scoring 5 goals in the contest. Campbell scored her first three goals in the opening six minutes to put the Broncos ahead 3-1. Sophomore, Sarah Merry (Ware, MA/Wilbraham Monson Academy) would add one more goal for the Broncos before Pepperdine would go on a 4-0 run, scoring on four consecutive free position shots. Campbell finally stopped the barrage of goals by the Waves by adding her fourth goal with 10:27 left in the half to make it 6-5, Santa Clara. The half would finish as 7-7 tie with both team looking to find their rhythm. The Waves had taken advantage of every opportunity by scoring six of their seven goals on free position shots. Again in the second half, both teams struggled to find their rhythm in a stop and go contest. Freshman, Claire O'Leary (Del Mar, CA/Torrey Pines) opened the scoring 15 seconds in with her second of three goals in the game. Senior goalie, Clair Metcalfe (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad HS) found her game in the second half after letting up 6-7 FP goals in the first half. Metcalfe only let in 2-8 FP goals and saving 10 shots in the second half to close the door on the Waves attack. The Broncos put the game away winning to crucial draws with under a minute remaining and scoring off of both by goals from Clair O'Leary and senior Raffinee Eller (Woodinville, WA/Overlake HS). Santa Clara improves to 1-0 while Pepperdine drops to 2-2.
