Quint's Round One Roundup

Here is ESPN's Quint Kessinich's take on Penn State's tough loss to Yale in the NCAA Tournament:

Yale 10, Penn State 7

The Nittany Lions came out flying and led 5-1 at halftime, bolstered by goals from Gavin Ahern and Nick Dolik. Austin Kaut had seven saves at the break and PSU looked sharp, holding Yale scoreless for 27:00. Yale face-off man Dylan Levings was saddled with face-off violations and never got in a rhythm until the violations were reset at halftime.

Whatever Andy Shay did at halftime worked. Yale won the third quarter 4-1. The critical goals were bombs by Colin Flaherty that seemed to energize the Bulldogs. Penn State seemed to take the momentum back when they killed off the two-man penalty, but they turned the ball over too frequently in the second half. They looked worn out and sloppy late and shot just 2 of 21 after half.

Meanwhile, Yale got stronger as the game wore on. Mike McCormack was everywhere. Ryan McCarthy scored on an invert defensive breakdown. Kriby Zdrill, Brandon Mangan and Conrad Oberbeck made it 9-6. Check mate.

Yale has been a slow-starting first-quarter team all year. But a dramatic shift occurred at the intermission. They were a different team after half. Don't underestimate their chances against Syracuse. Yale has all the necessary components to win big, like their hockey team.
