Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Oct. 14, 2013

Here is what Inside Lacrosse had to say about Penn State at the Capital Lacrosse Classic ...

By midway through the second quarter in the first scrimmage, Penn State jumped to a 6-0 lead against Lehigh. A pair of starting attackmen led the way: Senior Shane Sturgis had three goals and an assist and classmate Gavin Ahern added two goals and two assists against Lehigh’s starting defense and junior goalie Matt Poillon.

By halftime, however, the Mountain Hawks had closed to 6-5. Junior Dan Taylor took over the offense with three goals and one assist and sophomore Ray Mastroianni added a goal and an assist.

Penn State lost a couple players to minor injuries in the second quarter, including Sturgis and freshman midfielder Dan Craig (two goals).

“The injuries all happened in the second quarter against Lehigh,” Tambroni says. “I don’t believe any of them is bad enough to keep them out for the remainder of the fall or until January.”

Craig (Centre Dufferin, Ont.) had an impressive performance in the mold of UMBC’s Gordon; he scored two goals on two shots. He was slated for a lot more playing time in the afternoon until he was injured, Tambroni says. …

In the second scrimmage, sophomore TJ Sanders scored five goals for the Nittany Lions….

Overall, Tambroni says he was pleased to face other college teams.

“The fall is an important piece. We learn how to travel and what you need to work on,” he says. “You never know year to year what you need to work on. If you just play against yourselves you get comfortable with your own strengths and weaknesses. When you play somebody else they always expose you, no matter what. They always do.

“So we’ll take from this that we got exposed in a in a lot of different parts.” …

Penn State’s starting midfield was freshman Nick Aponte (West Islip, NY), junior Pat Manley and senior Tom LaCrosse. Aponte had two assists by my count.

The second line was sophomore Sammy Davis and juniors Kyle Baier and Erik Myers (one goal).

And special mention to junior Bryan Gerrato, who scored two good goals against Bucknell.
