NCAA Playoff Expansion a Possibility

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Sep. 20, 2013

As a result of recent changes, the field for the NCAA playoffs may be expanding from the current 16 team format to a field of 18-20 teams with play-in games as early as the 2014 season. As of now, there could be up to 10 automatic bids for the 2014 NCAA tournament for conference champions (It is still to be determined if the ACC champion gets an AQ for 2014). The rest of the NCAA tournament field is made up of at-large selections determined by the NCAA selection committee.

For, 2014 the CAA has ruled that Penn State is not eligible for the CAA tournament which determines the conference's AQ for the NCAA tournament. Accordingly, for PSU to get into the NCAA tournament in 2014, it will have to be an at-large selection as it was in the 2013 tournament.
