Panthers Defeat Richmond 17-15

The Panthers came out strong against Richmond this weekend, with a goal by #14 Tyler Novotny within 15 seconds of the first quarter, assisted by #2 Bryan Peck. Although Richmond scored four goals in the first quarter, goalie #22 Drew Miller had 5 saves to keep the Panthers in the game. Senior attack #21 Joe Grmusa also put one in the back of the net, assisted by #18 Cheech Gianfrante to end the first quarter with a score of 2-4, Richmond.

During the second quarter, Novotny scored his second goal, assisted by #49 Colin Peck. Richmond responded with another goal, but the Panthers fought their way through the Spider’s defense with a goal by #0 Alex Powell, assisted by #2 B. Peck. Richmond scored one more goal and Novotny put one in the net as the seconds ticked down to close the half. The Pittsburgh Panthers went into halftime with a one-point deficit, with the score at 5-6, Richmond.

Pittsburgh was on fire during the second half, with an early goal by Junior attack-man Powell, assisted by C. Peck. The Panthers kept Richmond to three goals during the third quarter and were able to take the lead with goals by both Bryan Peck and Matt Wolfe, and two goals by Tyler Novotny. The Panthers lead the Spiders 10-9 going into the final quarter of the game.

Novotny continued his scoring streak during the fourth quarter, scoring a beautiful goal off the rebound to start the Panther’s scoring run. #21 Joe Grmusa scored two back-to-back goals, one assisted by freshman #10 Matt Wolfe. The defense kept Richmond scoreless early on, with aggressive play by Junior #28 Max Carlson and impressive saves by goalie Drew Miller. Pittsburgh continued to score with two more goals, one by Novotny with the pass from #1 Argyros, and the second by Powell with the pass from Bryan Peck. Richmond then scored their first goal of the final quarter, bringing the score to 15-10, Panthers in the lead. Joe Grmusa and Tyler Novotny were able to put two more goals on the board for the Panthers, and Richmond went on a late-game scoring streak to add five more goals to their score. The Pittsburgh Panthers came out victorious, with a final score of 17-15.
