The Panthers came out strong against Northwood University’s Timberwolves earlier this afternoon. Senior attack-man (#14) Tyler Novotny started off the game by scoring Pitt’s first goal of the afternoon assisted by (#21) Joe Grmusa; the first of many assists between the two boys during today’s game against Northwood. Alex Powell (#0) quickly followed Novotny with his first goal of three. The Panthers maintained control on offense throughout the majority of the first quarter with the help of the defensive midfielders. Long-stick defenseman (#28) Max Carlson had a plethora of memorable clears up the field, one in which resulted in a swift pass to Novotny, resulting in a goal from Grmusa. Ryan Lord (#19) also contributed two quick goals for Pitt at the end of the 1st quarter.

Pitt went into the 2nd quarter up 9-0. Less than 10 seconds in (#4) Joshua Sutterfield won the face-off for the Panthers and quickly passed it down field to (#10) Chris Wetzel for Pitt’s 10th goal of the game. Shortly after, defensive midfielder (#5) Patrick Kelly had his first unassisted goal of the season for the Panthers. Pitt continued to maintain control of the ball and the boys were on a shooting streak. (#15) Thomas Pham put in another goal for Pitt, assisted by (#10) Chris Wetzel bringing up the score to 12-0. With eleven minutes left in the 2nd quarter, Northwood University scored their first goal of the game. Pitt’s motivation continued, however, and right after Northwood scored, Pitt put in 3 quick goals scored by Powell, Lord, and Novotny. The attack was on fire today, but the Panthers’ defenders should not be left un-noted. With 4 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, Pitt’s goalie Drew Miller produced a beautiful save, keeping the Timberwolves to just one goal in the first half of the game. Wetzel, Novotny, Powell, and McGoogan all produced goals in the last couple minutes of the first half, bringing the score up to 18-1.

(#15) Thomas Pham started the second half of the game strongly with a defensive hit shutting down Northwood’s offense and turning the ball over in Pitt’s favor. With seven minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Northwood scored their second goal, but this only amped up the Panthers. Shortly thereafter, Novotny scored his fifth goal of the game, assisted once again by attack-man Joe Grmusa. Quickly after Novotny’s goal, the boys switched and Grmusa scored yet another one for the team, assisted by Novotny. These two were an unstoppable duo today. As the end of the 2nd quarter approached, long-stick defenseman (#3) Paulius Razgaitis and attacker (#6) Ryan McGoogan put two quick goals on the board for the Panthers.

Going into the final quarter, Pitt was up against the Northwood Timberwolves 22-2. Pitt’s defense kept the Timberwolves scoreless for the remainder of the game. With a nice rebound off the goalie, (#14) Tyler Novotny quickly blocked the clear and got a quick shot on goal for Pitt; his sixth goal of the game. In the final quarter, midfielder (#45) Michael Davila put in his first goal of the game for Pitt, assisted by (#1) Argyos. Once the Panther’s started scoring again they just couldn’t stop.  (#8) Washington quickly scored, assisted by (#10) Wetzel. Wetzel quickly followed his assist with a goal for Pitt. Dominating the field, (#45) Davila produced his 2nd goal of the quarter assisted by (#5) defensive midfielder Patrick Kelly. Powell ended the game for the Panthers scoring the 28th goal for Pitt.

The University of Pittsburgh Panther’s defeated the Northwood University Timberwolves 28-2. Next weekend Pitt will travel to Georgia to take on Clemson, Auburn, and Georgia Tech. Hail to Pitt!
