The snow in Pittsburgh didn’t stop the Panthers from heating up the Cost Center last night with a crushing victory over the University of Toledo Rockets. Less than one minute into the first quarter, Panther’s Colin Peck (#49) made the first goal of the season. Pittsburgh’s offense continued to dominate the remainder of the first quarter, with two more goals by Matt Wolfe (#9) and Cheech Glanfrate (#18).

Keeping the intensity high during the second quarter, Pittsburgh attackers Tyler Novotny (#14), Chris Wetzel (#10), and Joe Grmusa (#21) scored three quick goals to secure a comfortable, six-point lead. Long stick midfielder Paul Razgaitis (#3) had a fast break down the field to score and bring it up to a 7-0 lead mid-way through the second quarter. Razgaitis recalled his goal saying, “I just closed my eyes and threw it as hard as I could. Sometimes you get lucky, I guess”. To close the half, Mike Argyros (#1) and Alex Powell (#0) scored to bring the Panthers lead to 9-0.

Novotny started the second half with two goals, his first within just 10 seconds of winning the face off. Powell quickly followed with his second goal of the night, assisted by defender Max Carlson (#28), who helped keep Toledo scoreless throughout the majority of the game. A highlight of the game, Novotny scored three times in less than thirty seconds, leaving Toledo no time to reset between goals. Pittsburgh continued to dominate the second half as Wolfe brought in two additional goals, Argyros and Wetzel each scored once again, and freshmen Ryan McGoogan (#6) brought in his first career goal. Toledo did manage to score twice in the fourth quarter, but they still came out defeated. Pittsburgh ended up on top, winning their spring 2013 home opener against Toledo 20-2.

The Panthers travel to Washington and Jefferson College this Sunday to take on George Washington at 1:00PM with the hope to make it an undefeated weekend.
