Pitt Fall Ball Victories Continue

This past Saturday, the men’s lacrosse team had two games, taking on both La Roche and Ohio University. The University of Pittsburgh came out on top with two great wins, beating La Roche 9-8 and OU 5-4.

The Pitt Panthers came out strong in the first half against La Roche, going into halftime with a 6-3 lead. Pitt controlled the majority of the face-offs and was able to keep the ball on offense for the majority of the game. Players Ryan Lord (Junior, #19), Tyler Novotny (Senior, #14), and Sam Westenberger (Junior, #44) were the lead scorers against La Roche, and greatly contributed to the 9-8 win. When the ball wasn’t being dominated by Pitt’s offense, their defense was strong and communicating effectively. The Panthers’ defense was constantly moving on and off the field as they, along with the help of the goalie, kept the La Roche offense to only three goals in the first half.

Later that afternoon, Pitt took on Ohio University (OU). OU came out strong and solid, but was still no match against the Pitt Panthers. The game was very close throughout both 20-minute halves as both teams fought for the lead. Down by one goal with two minutes left, Pitt came back with a vengeance. Eighteen minutes into the half, attacker Chris Wetzel (Freshman, #10) tied up the game with a quick, but key goal. This instantaneously pumped up the players and the team was ready to get back control of the ball. With a little over thirty seconds left, Pitt won the face off, passed the ball down the field to Tom Pham (Sophomore, #15), who quickly assisted Novotny in scoring the winning goal. The last seconds of the game were played phenomenally by Pitt’s defense, as they were able to keep OU from tying up the game, finishing the game with a 5-4 win.

What an exciting day for Pitt Men’s Lacrosse, and a great forecast for the season to come. Hail to Pitt!
