No. 16 Pitt Upsets No. 12 Boston College in Heart-Stopping Double OT

The stage was set for a clash of MCLA contenders Saturday night at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium.  In the second game of a double-header promoting Cystic Fibrosis awareness, the #16 Pitt Panthers took on the #12 Boston College Eagles.

Boston College scored early on in the first quarter to draw first blood, but Tyler Novotny fought through a face-guarding midfielder to finish a bullet pass from Colin Peck, tying the score at one. BC dropped another goal, but Novotny had an answer once again. Bryan Peck then finished from the crease on a man up opportunity to give the Panthers their first lead of the game. The Eagles scored one more before halftime, tying the score 3-3 at the half.

To start the scoring in the second half, Defenseman Max Carlson scooped a ground ball and took it coast to coast to put the Panthers on top again, 4-3. After another solid Panther defensive stop, Novotny grabbed a deflected ball on the crease and stuck it for another goal. Pitt 5-3. The Panthers extended their lead to 6-3 with a goal from Bryan Peck just moments later. 

After a Boston College timeout, the Eagles quickly swung the momentum by scoring two consecutive goals, bringing the score to 6-5. Joe Grmusa’s first goal of the day put Pitt back up by two, with the score at 7-5, and Novotny scored his fourth shortly afterwards to bring Pitt’s lead to 3.  Despite a phenomenal effort by the Pitt defense, the Eagles mounted an incredible fourth quarter comeback, scoring three late goals, including one with less than a minute left, to tie the game at eight and force overtime.

Pitt Senior goalie Chris Gorham stole the spotlight in the first overtime, as Boston College dominated the possession.  Gorham stopped shot after shot, and Pitt escaped to the second overtime unscathed.

After a defensive stop, Pitt’s offense looked to take advantage of one of their few overtime possessions.  After Novotny wrangled an errant shot, the junior Attackman fed Joe Grmusa, who, in his signature style, drove around the crease and ripped home the winning goal.  Grmusa had few words to describe the moment: “Wicked hard, boys.”  The Panthers rushed onto the field to celebrate a hard-fought win and a great weekend in Beantown.
