Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Apr. 18, 2011

On Friday Night, April 15th, the Pitt Panthers beat the West Virginia Mountaineers by a final score of 16-7.  On Sunday afternoon, April 17th, Pitt beat the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 14-10.  These two wins ended the Panther's 2011 regular season with a 9-2 record, 2-1 in the CCLA East.

If the games vs the NCLL are counted, Pitt finished the season with 11 wins and 2 losses, with the wins over Youngstown State and Robert Morris earlier in the season.

The annual Laxyard Brawl against West Virginia was back and forth throughout the first half that ended with Pitt up by a narrow one goal lead.  It took a shut down effort by the close defense senior Jordan Kepner, and Freshmen Steven Gill and Max Carlson, and freshman goalie Drew Miller to hold the Mountaineers to three goals in the second half, while the offense registered 11 goals, leading Pitt to a 16-7 victory.

Junior midfield Pat Bursh (1G, 5A) and sophomore attackman Tyler Novotny (4G, 2A)  lead the Panthers offensively while freshmen attackman Alex Powell recorded his first career hat trick with 3G against the Mountaineers.

Junior face-off midfield Nick Ruff also had a strong game against WVU, winning 15 of his 17 total face-offs taken, scoring 1 goal, and getting 10 ground balls in the outing.  After a season of solid defensive play, Junior defensive midfielder Elliot Clakely finally got payback for his hard work, scoring his first goal of the season.  In total, 13 different Panthers scored in the Laxyard Brawl

On Sunday, Pitt started off the game versus Wake Forest slow and flat as the Demon Deacons jumped to a 7-4 lead at halftime.  Solid half time adjustments brought the Panthers back to life, scoring 10 goals while holding the Deacon’s to three goals in the second half, and winning the game 14-10

Junior midfield Pat Bursh (1G, 3A) and sophomore attackman Tyler Novotny (3G, 1A) again led the Panthers offensively against Wake Forest.  Junior midfield Chad Kinslow registered his third hat trick of the season, 8th of his career while playing in his home high school stadium.  In total, ten different panthers scored in this game.

Next up, Pitt has back-to-back bye weeks as the team enter their final exam period of the academic year, and before the next game in the CCLA playoffs.  The CCLA Division 1 playoffs will begin on Saturday, May 7th in Saline, Michigan. Pitt is projected to have a CCLA Play off rematch against Michigan State.
