Pitt Drops game vs Michigan, stays Optimistic on the Season

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Mar. 21, 2011

The Pittsburgh Panthers travelled to Ann Arbor, Michigan this past Saturday night (March 19) to match up against the three time defending nation champion, #1 Michigan Wolverienes, and came up short in a lop-sided 1-20 loss.

Pitt fell to 3-2 on the season with their second loss, and fell to second place and 1-1 in the CCLA East Division.  "It was a great opportunity to play agains such a high caliber opponent," said Coach Andrew Stypula after the game.  "now we know what it takes to be the best in the country"

The Panthers came out strong playing solid defense, but could not shut down the michigan offense and played a majority of the game on defense. Junior goalie and captain Chris Gorham played as best of a game as he could, and gained high compliments from some of the Michigan Coaching Staff.  "...he (a michigan coach) came up and said that I was the best goalie he's seen Michigan play all year. That's great toe hear, but doesn't soften the hurt from the loss one bit" said Gorham, shortly after the game.

The biggest loss in this game for the Panthers was when Junior Midfield Captain and face-off specilist Matt Pham went down with a knee injury that took him out of the game early in the second half.  The initial diagnosis from the on-field trainers was that it was nothing major, but could keep Pham sidelined for at least the next few weeks.  Pham is currently tied for 4th in the nation with 36 Ground balls on the year, and leads the Panthers in ground balls and all face-off stats.

Pitt is in action again this weekend and looks to rebound against Northeastern University on Sunday March 27, at 2 PM. Pitt traveled to and beat Northeastern last year in a thrilling 8-7 win.
