Panthers Go 1-1 In Fall Scrimmages

Pittsburgh, PA - The Panthers completed their Fall Ball schedule this past Sunday with an away win at Grove City.  After months of practicing, starting shortly after the academic year began in late August, the team finally got to show their stuff against an opponent with two games in back-to-back weekends in October.

The Bobcats of Ohio University traveled to the Cost Center to take on the Panthers on Sunday, October 20.  This fall's Pitt team looked a bit different the one that took the field last Spring, with the addition of Head Coach Jason Rickel, Assistant Coach Joe Grmusa (a former Pitt attackman) and fourteen new players added to the roster.  As they took the field against the Bobcats, the Panthers saw these growing pains come to fruition early and often, struggling with turnovers and penalties.  Despite a total of nine minutes of penalties, Pitt rallied in the second half to take the lead briefly before falling in the closing minutes, 13-11.  The Panthers and Bobcats will meet again in the Spring in Athens.

On Saturday, October 26, the Panthers traveled to Grove City to take on the Wolverines.  The early morning travel and cold, blustery weather may have stifled the Panthers' offense early in the game, as the team put up only two goals in the first half.  A solid defensive performance kept the team in the game, however, as the Panthers conceded only four goals in the contest.  The freshmen attack lineup of Colin Schultz, Mike Cikovic, and Matt Higgins propelled the offense in the second half, burying goal after goal to put the game away.  The Panthers walked out with a victory, 9-4.

Pitt will close out their fall season with their annual Alumni Game on Friday, November 8.  The game will take place at 8 pm at the Cost Center.  All alumni, family, and friends of Panthers Lacrosse are encouraged to attend!
