It’s Lacrosse Time in Oklahoma!

After weeks of delays and adverse weather, the Oklahoma Sooners finally took the field for the first time this past weekend as they played against the TCU Horned Frogs and the Harding University Bisons.

Excitement was in the air for the Sooners’ contest against the Horned Frogs since it was the opening game against an LSA division rival. The Sooners played a strong first half with offensive execution and a defensive game plan that limited the opportunities of the Horned Frogs’ strong attackmen. By disrupting their offense, the Sooners entered halftime with a 9-6 lead. The third quarter told a different story as TCU was able to storm out of halftime with their adjustments, quick transition goals, and poorer execution by the Sooners on their way to a 12-10 lead entering the final quarter. After absorbing TCU’s comeback, the Sooners staged one of their own, winning the quarter and taking the lead within the final minute of regulation off of a Garrett Purcell goal fed by Jay Stouffer. After 30 seconds of tense defense later, the Sooners came away with a thrilling 14-13 victory. Sophomore Pete Kitsos led all scorers with 7 goals and 2 assists, and goalie Sean Lefton aided in the win with 22 saves and a .629 save percentage.

The following day, the Sooners’ took on the Harding Bisons, an MCLA Division II team. Despite a sluggish first half, the Sooners still entered halftime with a 6-1 lead. With the outcome of the game certain, several starters were rested in the second half and playing time was well spread over the entire team as many players gained valuable playing experience. Again, Pete Kitsos led all scorers with 4 goals and 5 assists on the way to a 14-6 victory for the Sooners.

The Sooners have two weeks to prepare for their biggest game yet of the season as they take on perennial LSA powerhouse SMU Mustangs on March 4th under the lights at the OU Soccer Stadium (John Crain Field). This matchup provides an opportunity for the Sooners to make a statement and grab control of the division. Check back soon for more information and be sure to come support your Sooners!
