My Story

My name is Kim Roper. I have been married to my husband Jim for 27 years and we have two sons; Drew, a 2013 graduate of Penn State University and Matt, a 2014 graduate of Ohio State University. Life for the Roper family was very typical until 2009 when my doctor noticed a growth during my annual mammogram. A biopsy was done and it was discovered that I had Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which is a cancer that affects the white blood cells.

There are several different kinds of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and the kind I have is challenging.  I underwent  months of radiation therapy in 2009 after my original diagnosis.  Unfortunately, it was discovered during my one year evaluation in 2010 that the cancer had returned.

I then underwent about five months of chemotherapy from February until June 2010.  About six weeks after the chemotherapy ended, the cancer returned yet again.  In September of 2012, it was discovered that the cancer has spread.  My best option at that time was another course of chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, there was and continues to be no match for me in the National Bone Marrow Registry.  I underwent a second course of chemotherapy at Ohio State University Medical Center from November of 2012 until January of 2013. Although that therapy has put my cancer in remission, I still need to find a donor match.

It is easy to see if you are a match for me or anyone else who needs a bone marrow transplant. All it takes is a few minutes of your time and a cotton swab. You have the power to save a life. Take the test and spread the word. Thank you.
