News Lacrosse Serves Up World Of Opportunity For Kilbourne Graduate - Jul 11, 2018

Juan Contreras began playing lacrosse as a seventh-grader, mainly to stay in shape for football. At Worthington Kilbourne High School, he was a backup midfielder. Contreras entered Otterbein when the school was just starting its lacrosse program and wasn’t sure if he even wanted to continue his career. Now, at 27, Contreras will compete at the pinnacle of the sport. Next week, Contreras will play for Mexico in the World Lacrosse Games, the sport’s equivalent to soccer’s World Cup. Tom Schreiber and Marcus Holman of the Ohio Machine in Major League Lacrosse will play for the United States team, and the Machine’s Mark Matthews is on the Canadian team. The tournament starts Thursday in Netanya, Israel. “I’m super excited,” Contreras said. He wanted to try out for the Mexican team for the world games four years ago but found out about the tryout too late. So he set his sights on this year. He successfully tried out for the team last fall in Mexico City. “The fact it’s finally here is a little surreal,” Contreras said. “I can’t wait to represent my heritage and also Columbus lacrosse as well.” Contreras has dual citizenship. He was born in Columbus to an American-born mother and a father who emigrated from Mexico. “He grew up with nine brothers and sisters,” Contreras said of his father. “They didn’t have very much money and he knew coming to the United States was an opportunity.” Contreras lived in Mexico as a first- and second-grader before returning to the U.S. He has regularly visited relatives near Mexico City since then. When he came back to the United States, playing sports became a way for Contreras to gain acceptance. “As a kid growing up, I was one of the only Hispanic kids in my class,” Contreras said. “When it came to lacrosse and sports, it was a platform to be equal with everybody and make some friends.” Contreras was a backup on the Kilbourne team that won the 2009 state championship and produced a bevy of Division I college players. “Playing with those guys is what helped me get to this level,” he said. That is, once he decided to keep playing at all. He enrolled at Otterbein as a regular student. “I got there and I realized I missed the game a lot,” Contreras said. He played as a freshman on Otterbein’s first team, but he still wasn’t fully committed to the sport. A heart-to-heart with coach Colin Hartnett after the season was a turning point. “In my mind, I wasn’t going to let him quit,” Hartnett said. “He made the decision that if he wanted to do it, he wanted to put all of himself into it.” And so he did. He became a valuable two-way midfielder and was the first in what has become a valuable Kilbourne-to-Otterbein pipeline. “Juan has always been one of my favorite guys I’ve ever coached,” Hartnett said. “I’m just incredibly proud of him, not as much for what he has done on the lacrosse field, but how he has grown into a man and become very successful after college.” Contreras works in asset management for J.P. Morgan in Columbus. He also coaches for Resolute Lacrosse, a club program, and has helped out with the Kilbourne program. Contreras is now proud to be helping promote the growth of the sport in Mexico. Its national team finished 23rd four years ago in the world games. He said the goal this year is a top-10 finish among the 46 teams. But Contreras said his motivation supersedes success on the field. “Lacrosse is a platform for me,” he said. “If I’m being honest, there are a lot of negative views about Mexico, especially over the last couple of years. This is my opportunity to have a voice for my Mexican heritage and other Mexican-Americans. It kind of got bigger than myself, and I’m glad to be a part of it. It’s pretty special.”

2018 Worthington Kilbourne Wolves (OCC "Cardinal" & State Division 1 Regional Champions) Worthington Kilbourne’s playoff run ended Wednesday night in an 18-8 loss to Cincinnati St. Xavier in a “Final Four” match-up played in Dayton, Ohio. While a loss and the end of a season always stings in the moment, it was a remarkable 2018 campaign for the Wolves on many levels. Worthington Kilbourne finished the season with a record of 17-6, and earned an OCC Cardinal Division Championship along with an OHSAA Division 1 Regional Championship. The Wolves win in the Regional Championship against Upper Arlington earned Kilbourne’s 14th appearance in the State “Final Four” in the school’s 27 year history. At the JV level, the Wolves finished the season 12-1 and also went undefeated conference play. The success of both Varsity and JV is a nod to program depth and a positive sign for future success. The 2018 season was a very successful maiden voyage for first-year Head Coach Mike Lippert. Lippert was a longtime assistant for the Wolves who took over the Head Coach position in the off-season. In his first season as Head Coach, Lippert earned OCC Coach of the Year and MSLCA Coach of the Year. Most of all congratulations to all student-athletes for a fantastic and memorable season on and off the field. Many Wolves earned All-Conference and All-Region honors. The Wolves success on the field is matched by the number of community service hours members dedicate through the team’s “Man-Up” community service program. A special thanks and best wishes to all the graduating seniors and their families. ThisWeek News: Cincinnati St. Xavier Beats Worthington Kilbourne 18-8 - May 31, 2018 ThisWeek News: Cincinnati St. Xavier Beats Worthington Kilbourne 18-8 DAYTON — Kilbourne wasn’t able to climb out of an early hole against St. Xavier. The Blue Bombers scored on their first two possessions and led 7-2 after the first quarter en route to a decisive win over the Wolves in a Division I state semifinal May 30 at Chaminade Julienne. Kilbourne finished 17-6, while St. Xavier improved to 18-3 and will play St. Ignatius in the state final. The Wolves got a goal from Jake LeVette to pull within 2-1, but failed to take advantage of a man-up advantage seconds later, turning the ball over. St. Xavier then got a pair of goals from both Nick Shamsi and John Holcomb that more than offset a goal from Kilbourne’s Carson Kott to take a big lead into the second quarter. “That was a big play at the time, but I’m not sure that play was a turning point,” Kilbourne coach Mike Lippert said. “They beat us in transition all night and they beat us in getting ground balls. They have two guys who are exceptional faceoff guys who both will play Division I college lacrosse. We also weren’t able to execute our clear the way we typically do. “Kudos to (St. Xavier). They are a great team. They’ve got a lot of dudes who are big, fast and athletic.” The Wolves never got closer than three goals after the opening quarter, trailing 10-6 at halftime and 14-6 after three quarters. The game was delayed for 2 hours, 4 minutes because of lightning with 9:29 remaining and Kilbourne trailing 15-7. Nick Clay, Ryan Wesolowski and Jake LeVette all scored two goals for the Wolves, while Holcomb and Johnny Marrocco both scored four goals for the Blue Bombers. —Brad Emerine

The second-seeded Worthington Kilbourne High School boys lacrosse team scored four of the game’s final five goals to defeat top-seeded Upper Arlington 8-7 in the Division I, Region 3 final May 25 at Fortress Obetz. “This is incredible. We’ve wanted this opportunity all season and we got it and now we’re going to state,” said Wolves sophomore Will Alban, who scored the winning goal with 4 minutes, 27 seconds remaining. “It was a perfect ground ball by Ryan Weslowski and a great take up the field and a great look by Carson Kott that got me open for the shot. It was a team effort.” Kilbourne, which fended off the Golden Bears in the game’s waning minutes, improved to 17-5 and advanced to play Cincinnati St. Xavier in a state semifinal May 30 at Dayton Chaminade Julienne. “Pretty amazing,” Kilbourne coach Mike Lippert said. “At halftime, I told the kids we were in this place before (in a 6-5 loss to UA in a regular-season game April 14), but this time we were going to finish it. We stuck to the game plan and our defense has played well all season, so we were in a good spot at the end when they had the ball with 22 seconds left. “It’s not often we beat Arlington, so we’re going to enjoy this. They have such a great tradition and program over there. I thought (goalkeeper Dane Jackson) played very, very well and I’m just so proud of all of them.” UA, which finished 19-3, led 3-0 in the first quarter, 5-4 at halftime and 6-5 entering the fourth quarter. Kott tied the game off an assist from Jake LeVette and Biglin scored off an assist from Nick Clay to give the Wolves a 7-6 lead with 7:01 left. The Bears tied the game on Harry Baker’s goal with 6:13 left before Alban scored the final goal while in transition following a UA turnover. “They took advantage of one of our turnovers and we had two or three chances in the final minutes and didn’t take advantage of them,” UA coach Chris Olson said. “It was a good game from two great teams and we came up short and you have tip your cap to Kilbourne.” Kott, Wesolowski and Biglin all scored two goals for the Wolves. Baker and Charlie Little both scored two goals for the Bears.

Worthington Kilbourne Claims Regional Championship With 8-7 Win Versus Upper Arlington -- May 25, 2018 Kilbourne defeated Upper Arlington 8-7 Friday night at The Fortress in Obetz to advance to the OHSAA State Semifinal game. The win is Worthington Kilbourne’s 14th Regional Championship and State “Final Four” appearance in the schools’ 27 years. The Wolves fell behind 0-3 to start the game before scoring 4 straight goals of their own to take the lead. UA answered with a series of goals to take a 6-5 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, the Wolves would not be denied outscoring UA 3-1. The Wolves clinched the game with a final save and ran out the clock to secure the one goal win. The win avenged a one goal loss to Upper Arlington in the regular season. The Wolves will play Cincinnati St. Xavier in the State Semifinal. The game will be Wednesday May 30th at 7:00pm at Dayton Chaminade Julienne High School. Come support the wolves in the "Final Four"!
Wolves Punch Ticket To OHSAA Regional Final With 7-3 Win Over New Albany - May 22, 2018 Wolves Punch Ticket To OHSAA Regional Final With 7-3 Win Over New Albany Worthington Kilbourne punched its ticket to the OHSAA Regional final with a 7-3 win over #3 seed New Albany Tuesday night. The Wolves displayed solid game control in the victory – building a 5-3 halftime lead and then holding the Eagles scoreless in the second half. The Wolves kept the offensive pressure on throughout the game but credit the Eagles’ goalie with a great performance that kept the game within reach (unofficially he was credited with 17 saves). However, the Wolves would not be denied and timely goals along with a strong performance by the Kilbourne “D” in the second half sealed the win. The Wolves will now advance to the OHSAA Regional Final game versus Upper Arlington Friday night at 7:00pm at "The Fortress" in Obetz. The winner of Friday's game will advance to the State Semifinal or "Final Four". Let's Go Wolves!
