UA Edges Kilbourne for Championship

Cam Williams was offensive MVP as Upper Arlington won its 12th lacrosse state championship, 10-8 over Worthington Kilbourne last night at Dublin Jerome. But Williams knew sophomore Eliot Allen made the goal that mattered most.

With Kilbourne having cut the lead to 7-5 late in the third quarter and working in a rare two-man-up situation because of back-to-back penalties, the Wolves turned it over. Alex Powers then passed to a fast-breaking Allen, who fired a 20-yard bullet past goalie Cole Horwatt.

“That was huge,” said Williams, who scored two goals and had an assist. “Before that, it seemed like Kilbourne had all the momentum, but Eliot stopped that. That changed everything for us.”

It allowed the Golden Bears to take control and keep it through a hectic fourth quarter. It was their second win over Kilbourne in the title game in three years; Kilbourne won in 2009.

“Beating the team that beat us last year, this was just the perfect ending for a great season,” Williams said.

UA coach Ted Wolford took it all in.

“For me, the coach, it’s just doing my job,” he said. “But to see these kids happy like this, and to know how hard they worked to get to this point, that’s what it’s all about.”

Kilbourne gained three unassisted goals from Conor Igoe in the first half to stay within reach of UA, which had a 7-3 lead at the break. Two straight goals by Charlie Bassani to start the second half put the Wolves back in it.

“Our guys battled hard to the very end,” Kilbourne coach Drew May said.
