Kilbourne Coming in with Inexperienced Offense

The 2010 Worthington Kilbourne boys lacrosse team has already lost as many games as it did in 2009.

Of course, when you go 21-2 and win the Division I state championship the previous year, it's hard to go anywhere but down.

First-year coach Drew May looks at his squad, which stands 2-2 on the young season, and sees an experienced defense and a young, inexperienced offense.

"Our one glaring weakness is inexperience on offense, and the key is how quickly we develop," stated May. "We have been developing and doing some nice things."

The Wolves lost 15 seniors to graduation from last year's team that defeated Upper Arlington 7-6 in the state title game. They return 16 letterwinners, with the bulk of the core experience on defense.

"We have a strong defense coming back and right now we lean pretty hard on our defense," May said. "We returned seven of our top nine from last year and they're keeping us in ballgames we're not scoring goals."

It starts in net for the Wolves on the defensive side with two seniors in goal. Senior Cole Horwatt started the first game, but an injury has slowed his playing time. He is slowly coming back and competing with senior Alex Watson. Watson has started the last three games.

"Returning two senior goalies is huge and they're battling it out for playing time," May said.

Leading the close defense are seniors Jake Hertenstein and Jacob Seidensticker, with seniors Tim Gebert, Matt Goldberg and Peter Worley and junior Nate Labine serving as the long-stick midfielders.

The inexperience on offense starts with youth at the attack where senior Cory Spencer (40 goals, seven assists last year) is the only upperclassmen. He'll be mentoring three sophomores as the season progresses.

Senior captain Will Campbell (18 goals, 58 assists in '09) leads the group of midfielders. He plans to attend the University of North Carolina next year.

"We're going to lean hard on Will in the midfield," the coach said.

Seniors Connor Igoe (38 goals, 23 assists last year), Tyler Englehart and Kyle Giannamore join Campbell in the midfield.

On the young season, the offense has met with some bumps in the road; the most recent came Saturday, April 3, as the Wolves lost their second on the season to Dublin Jerome, 9-5. Sophomore letterwinner Charlie Bassani had three of WKHS's goals.

"Losing to one of your biggest rivals is hard, but you hope you bounce back and learn from your mistakes," May said. "A loss early in the season can teach you a lot. We had a bump in the road offensively, but we're developing."

Outside of the loss to Dublin Jerome, May believes Hilliard Davidson will be a team the Wolves need to be aware of this season, along with Upper Arlington and Cincinnati St. Xavier.

The Wolves look to improve upon their record by hosting three straight this week against Dublin Coffman on Wednesday, April 7 (7:30 p.m.), Cincinnati St. Xavier Friday, April 9 (3 p.m.) and Cleveland St. Ignatius Saturday, April 10 (7:30 p.m.).
