Defending Champion Kilbourne to be Led by Defense

ThisWeek Staff Writer

The graduation of 15 players from last year's Division I state championship team seemed to split the Worthington Kilbourne High School boys lacrosse squad down the middle.

"We have a very experienced team on the defensive side," said first-year coach Drew May, whose team opened last Wednesday at Cincinnati Moeller and faces Avon (Conn.) Old Farms on Saturday in Baltimore, Md. "And we're very young on the offensive side."

"This is a very exciting opportunity for the younger players. They've been in the shadows of last year's graduates, and they're excited to get their chance."

Both May, who replaced co-coaches Mike Riffee and Jon Ewert, and Thomas Worthington coach John Galipault will be making their debut as varsity coaches. May must find replacements from a team that finished 21-2 overall a year ago after defeating Upper Arlington 7-6 in the state final.

Kilbourne won the OCC-Buckeye Division at 7-0, finishing ahead of UA (6-1), Thomas (5-2), Dublin Jerome (4-3), Dublin Coffman (2-5), Dublin Scioto (2-5), Hilliard Davidson (2-5) and Hilliard Darby (0-7). Darby has moved to the OCC-Ohio this season.

The Wolves have four players who have signed to play in college -- seniors Will Campbell (North Carolina), Cole Horwatt (Wittenberg), Conor Igoe (Jacksonville) and Tyler Johnson (Wheeling Jesuit).

Horwatt is competing with seniors Alex Watson and Alex Wylly for time at goalie. Seniors David Rainey, Jake Hertnenstein, Jacob Seidensticker will lead the close defense and seniors Tim Gebhert, Matt Goldberg and Peter Worley will serve as long-stick midfielders. Also playing defense will be seniors Michael Frizzi, Matt Roper and Travis Seeger, juniors Kevin Carey and Nate Labine and sophomores Devin Heath and Trae Starker.

"What's nice is a lot of those guys play other sports together, which makes coaching them a lot easier," May said. "We have a lot of interchangeable parts. If someone gets hurt, someone else can jump in."

In the attack, senior Corey Spencer (40 goals, 7 assists) will mentor sophomores Charlie Bassani (8 assists), Nick Bortolani, James Meager, Brian Miller and Ryan Pritchett and freshman Jake Roberts.

May said the midfield, where the Wolves graduated six players, including five who are playing in college, is "clearly our biggest question mark." Campbell (18 goals, 58 assists) and Igoe (38 goals, 23 assists) lead the group of midfielders, which also consists of seniors Tyler Englehart and Kyle Giannamore, juniors Dominic Luckino, Matt Malone and Payden Pierce, sophomores Tae Young Kim and Jared Wright and freshmen Jonathon Watson and Matt Wylly.

"The key for us this season is how quickly will the young guys on our team grow up and become leaders," May said.
