Young Boys Squad Growing

The Worthington Kilbourne High School boys lacrosse team continues to be a work in progress.

The Wolves were 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the OCC-Cardinal Division before playing Dublin Scioto on April 25.

However, Kilbourne proved last year that hitting a stride at the right time of the season is most important, as it finished the regular season 8-10 before winning six consecutive games to earn the Division II state championship.

“Every year and every team is different. There is no magic formula,” coach Drew May said. “We’ve played some very good teams and some very senior-heavy teams and our young group is being forced to grow up.

“The only way we’re going to have a shot at the end of the season is to have incremental improvement each day.”

The Wolves lost to visiting Delaware 10-8 in a league game April 19 before falling to visiting Cincinnati St. Xavier 16-7 on April 22.

Nick Clay and Sam Biglin both scored three goals against Delaware and goalkeeper Dane Jackson made five saves. Against St. Xavier, Carson Kott had three goals, Will Alban scored two and Jackson made eight saves.

“Carson and Will are freshmen who have been nice surprises for us on the attack this year,” May said. “Nick Clay and Ryan Wesolowski have been our most consistent scorers. Defensively, Jack Trombetti and Curt Grawe have been our anchors, but we’re still trying to put the rest of those pieces together.

What we’ve talked about all season is that our guys have to make new mistakes. We’re encouraging that because it’s the only way they’re going to grow. We’re starting to see that now and it makes me feel better. As long as the mistakes are aggressive mistakes and the boys are doing what is asked of them, that is what will increase our level of play in the long run.”
