Worthington Kilbourne players hoist the Division II state championship plaque following an 11-7 win over Toledo St. Francis on June 4 at Thomas Worthington

Worthington Kilbourne’s mantra came to the forefront Saturday during a 11-7 win over Toledo St. Francis in the Division II lacrosse championship game at Thomas Worthington.

After St. Francis closed its deficit to one goal midway through the third quarter, Kilbourne took over and “left no doubt,” scoring five straight goals for an 11-5 lead with 4:05 remaining.

“That’s the slogan we came up with last summer after our two previous seasons ended in overtime losses,” coach Drew May said. “We wanted to leave no doubt, where a fluke play or an official’s call could cost us. It was the same for every practice: Make sure you work hard enough so we have no doubts in the game.”

Luke LeVette scored five goals, including two during the 5-0 surge. Jack Maloney had two goals and Jared Happ four assists. Chris Reynolds, who missed most of the season with injury, had nine saves for Kilbourne (14-10), which won the Division I title in 2009.

“It was frustrating being out with the ACL, but once I got back, our defense and offense began to click,” said Reynolds, the state Division II goalkeeper of the year. “We got hot at the right time. All props go to my coach and teammates. We were a band of brothers.”

Kilbourne led 2-0 after the first quarter. St. Francis (20-3) tied it at 2 before Kilbourne scored three in a row for a 5-2 halftime lead.

“We knew this would be a tight game and it was up to our defense to keep them in check until our offense got going,” said Alex Cash, who was named the defensive player of the game. “We heard how great their attackers were, and we just held our ground and made them work for everything they got."
