Kilbourne on a Roll After Early Struggles

Trying to persuade a team with a losing record to stick with its motto “leave no doubt” might sound odd, but Worthington Kilbourne boys lacrosse coach Drew May and his team didn't blink.

After a 1-4 start and a three-game losing streak that dropped the Wolves to 7-10, the team “ wiped the slate clean,” May said. Kilbourne has won five in a row and is two games away from winning a Division II state title. The Wolves play Cincinnati Summit Country Day in a semifinal tonight at Centerville.

“I really credit our guys for continuing to believe in one another and the coaching staff,” May said. “We talked all season that in some way, shape or form this will pay off, and that belief held strong in the locker room.”

The payoff came from having the third-hardest schedule in the state, according to Laxpower.com. Close losses to Brother Rice and Pittsford, highly ranked in Michigan and New York, respectively, as well as Cincinnati St. Xavier, Cleveland St. Ignatius and Upper Arlington — ranked Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in Ohio — strengthened the Wolves.

“We had a lot of hardships earlier in the season, but we were only losing by a few so we were right there,” said goalie Chris Reynolds, who missed much of the season with a torn knee ligament. “ But we started putting the pieces back together and got hot at the right time.”

Tonight the Wolves (12-10) face a Silver Knights team that has won 12 in a row and allows just 5.81 goals per game, but Kilbourne remains unfazed.

“I don't think there was a lot of love being thrown our way when we were 1-4 or 7-10, but our guys stayed strong — our record has prepared us for this game,” May said.
