Wolves Top DeSales to Win Region

The Worthington Kilbourne High School boys lacrosse team advanced to the state tournament for the first time in five years.

The third-seeded Wolves beat top-seeded and host DeSales 14-8 in the Division II Central Region final May 28 to improve to 12-10 and reach state for the first time since 2011, when they finished as Division I runners-up. They won the Division I title in 2009.

Kilbourne played Cincinnati Summit Country Day (19-2) in a state semifinal June 1 at Centerville. The winner plays Toledo St. Francis or Hunting Valley University School in the state final at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Thomas.

Summit Country Day, St. Francis and University School were the top seeds in their respective regions. St. Francis was 19-2 and University School was 17-3 before their semifinal June 1.

"These guys believe they can play with any team we face," Wolves coach Drew May said. "We have one of the hardest schedules in the state (according to LaxPower.com), so we've been tested and I think we came together at the right time."

Against DeSales, Kilbourne surrendered the first three goals before scoring the next three in a span of 70 seconds. The Wolves again scored three consecutive goals early in the second quarter to take the lead for good.

Jared Happ had four goals and four assists and Luke LeVette had three goals and three assists to lead Kilbourne, which also beat the Stallions during the regular season, 10-6 on April 12.

Happ said he knew the Wolves were capable of making a postseason run after a 10-9 loss to Upper Arlington on May 10. The Golden Bears were the Division I state runners-up last season and played Loveland in a Division I state semifinal June 1.

"We lost some close games early (in the season), but we kept it to a one-goal game the whole game against Upper Arlington and they could win the Division I championship," Happ said. "When we kept it close with them the whole time, I knew this was a team that could compete in Division II."

The Wolves, who are in their first season in Division II, feel comfortable with their depth.

"We can run a solid six midfielders," May said. "We have four (attackers) who can handle the ball and do their job, so we can get a decent rotation in there and that really helps. It helps tremendously. We figured we'd have good depth and we have proven that."

Kilbourne rolled past second-seeded and host Dublin Scioto 14-4 in a regional semifinal May 25. Happ had six goals and LeVette scored four to lead the Wolves, who sprinted to a 6-1 lead. Nick Clay added three goals and Chris Reynolds made seven saves.
