Wolves Focusing on Faceoffs, Defense

Kilbourne struggled at times last season to win key faceoffs, especially in an 11-10 overtime loss to Dublin Coffman in a Division I Central Region semifinal.

The Wolves are focused this season on improving on faceoffs and their overall team defense.

"We've got to come together defensively as a team and control faceoffs," said seventh-year coach Drew May, who entered the season with a 94-32 record at Kilbourne. "We've got depth in the midfield and we're unselfish on offense, so we believe those are our strengths."

Last season, the Wolves finished 15-5 overall and shared the OCC-Buckeye title with UA. They opened this season with an 8-3 loss to Watterson on March 22. They bounced back to beat New Albany 9-6 on March 24 but lost to Pittsford (N.Y.) Sutherland 12-8 on March 25 and were 1-2 before opening league play March 30 against Dublin Jerome.

"We've got experience back at every position, but have some younger guys in the mix as well," May said. "We've got to develop depth in order to play a lot of guys throughout the course of games."

Expected to lead Kilbourne in the midfield are seniors Jared Happ, Jake Weirick, Keegan Bartok, Jack Maloney and Connor Alley.

Leading the attack will be senior Luke LeVette and sophomores Nick Clay and Ryan Wesolowski.

Last season, Clay broke a school record for points by a freshman with 20.

"Weirick brings great leadership and a terrific dodging mentality," May said. "He's able to beat his man on a consistent basis. Happ has the ability to carry the team on his back and transform a game."

Happ made second-team all-state and first-team all-region and all-league last season.

Senior Alex Cash and junior Jack Trombetti are expected to lead the defense, and senior Chris Reynolds has returned in goal, although he currently is injured. Freshman Dane Jackson opened the season in net.

"Reynolds has a strong presence and leadership in goal and he's one of the best ball-stoppers we've ever had at Kilbourne," May said. "Cash can run for days. He takes away the ball away on a consistent basis. Plus, he makes plays in transition that most defenders can't do. He had seven goals last year as a defender."

Last year, Reynolds had the second-best save percentage (.634) for a season in program history.

Reynolds and Cash both were first-team all-region and second-team all-league and have committed to play for Robert Morris in Pittsburgh. Alley will play for Alma (Mich.) College and Weirick will play at Denison.

Freshman Aidan Cameron is expected to be Wolves' top player on faceoffs. Other expected key contributors are senior Garrett McCarthy on attack, sophomore Sam Biglin in the midfield and junior Curt Grawe and sophomore Liam Nehring on defense.
