Kilbourne Falls to Coffman in Semifinal

Ryan Agner, who was honorable mention all-league, was one of five senior starters for the Wolves.

The Worthington Kilbourne High School boys lacrosse team was confident heading into its home matchup with Dublin Coffman in a Division I Central Region semifinal May 27, as it had beaten the Shamrocks 9-4 on April 9.

The second-seeded Wolves couldn't complete the season sweep, however, as they fell to the fifth-seeded Shamrocks 11-10 in overtime to finish 15-5 overall.

"We thought we were going to beat them again, but Dublin Coffman has some good athletes and they got a lot better as a team since the first time we played them," junior attacker Jared Happ said.

Happ scored three goals and junior goalkeeper Chris Reynolds had nine saves for the Wolves, who led 3-2 and 7-6.

"Dublin Coffman won more faceoffs and possessed the ball better than we did," Happ said. "We had a chance to win the game in overtime, but we missed our shot."

The Wolves opened the tournament with an 11-0 win over 17th-seeded Olentangy Orange in a second-round game May 23 at home.

Happ and senior attacker Tyler Roe both had three goals, junior midfielder Jake Weirick scored two and Reynolds had nine saves.

Kilbourne finished 6-1 in the OCC-Buckeye Division to tie three-time defending Division I state champion Upper Arlington for the league title for the second year in a row.

Olentangy Liberty placed third (5-2), followed by Jerome (4-3), Coffman and Olentangy (both 3-4), Thomas (1-6) and Hilliard Davidson (0-7).

"Beating Dublin Jerome (11-2 on April 27) was big for us because they beat us three times last year, and winning the OCC was cool because it was a goal since the beginning of our season," Happ said.

The Wolves are losing 11 seniors, including five starters in Roe, Ryan Agner (attacker), Michael Calvert (defender), Joe Davis (midfielder) and Mike Viera (defender).

Viera was named first-team all-region and all-league, Roe was second-team all-region and all-league and Agner was honorable mention all-league. Davis was second-team all-league and honorable mention all-region despite missing the second half of the season with a broken ankle. Calvert also was honorable mention all-region.

The Wolves expect to return eight players who started or saw significant playing time in Happ, Reynolds, Weirick, juniors Alex Cash (long-stick midfielder), Luke LeVette (attacker) and Jack Maloney (midfielder), sophomore defender Jack Trombette and freshman attacker Nick Clay.

Cash, Happ and Reynolds were first-team all-region. Happ was first-team all-league and Cash and Reynolds were second-team all-league.

"Our future looks good because we have a lot of good athletes coming back," Happ said
