April 22nd, 2012 - Colonials Edge Past Hoyas 9-8

A torrential downpour of frigid rain soaked the two teams and the crowd on Sunday's matchup at GW's Mount Vernon Field. It was perhaps the perfect setting for the two DC rivals and provided a dramatic backdrop for the GW seniors last career home game. And as George Washington himself once proclaimed, "the frozen rains of winter, though we too must endure, shall break the spirit of our enemies," the Colonials fought till the final seconds to earn the win.

The Colonials scored first within 5 minutes of the 1st quarter from a low to low behind the back shot from Junior midfielder David Goscinak. Senior midfielder  Nicholas Bryan  beat his man down the right alley and fired a shot to bring the Colonials ahead, 2-0. Freshman attackman  Jake Venditto, off a succesful dodge from behind cage, was able to bring the total 1st quarter tally to 3-0. In the start of the 2nd, Georgetown broke their dry streak and got their first point on the board (3-1). Slick field conditions and tough defensive play by defensemen  David Thompson,  Sam Clements, and  Conor Gaffney resulted in multiple forced turnovers against the Hoyas. GW's midfield was quick to capitalize  and brought the score to 5-1 off of two fastbreak opportunities arising from such turnovers. The Hoyas remained resilient however, and the half ended tied 5-5.

Georgetown was never able to pull ahead though and GW remained in front throughout the 3rd and 4th quarters. By the middle of the 4th quarter thescore was GW 9 Georgetown 6 but the Hoyas were able to sneak in two goals to bring them within reach of victory with only 2 minutes remaining in the game. For nearly 1 and a half minutes GW was able to run down the clock in their offensive zone but a fumbled groundball gave the Hoyas a fastbreak opportunity with 20 seconds to play. Starting Junior goaltender  Zachary Quinn  stopped not only the fastbreak created shot opportunity but also denied a Georgetown attackman on the doorstep after the ball bounced into the crease from the initial save. A heartpounding end to a hard fought rivalry match!

GW sits at 8-3 for the regular season and will take on UMBC in the semi-finals of the DII Chesapeake Conference Championships on Friday, April 27th at the University of Maryland.
