SDC takes on Hawaii!

The San Diego Lacrosse Club returned to Hawaii for the 23rd Annual Hawaii Invitational Lacrosse Tournament in Oahu.  After placing second last year, the team was back to fight for the championship that eluded them.  Against the backdrop of the Diamond Head crater, the team played four games in the unseasonably hot weather.  Once again, SDC was generously sponsored by Pacific Beach's Dirty Birds Bar.

The first game pitted SDC against the Wahine Ikaika team from Hawaii.  From start to finish, SDC dominated the game, anchored by some strong defense and our spectacular goalie, Eve.  SDC's attack was potent throughout the game, with great movement, smart feeds, and a variety of goal-scorers.  SDC took game 1 by a score of 15-2.

Game 2 was against an energetic team from Japan, Chushikoku Youth.  What the Japanese team lacked in experience they made up for in energy and speed, as Chushikoku's transition game flourished.  However, they were met with a stingy defense and an even stingier goalie, as SDC was able to limit Chushikoku's chances.  On the offensive side, assisted goals were again the order of the day, as feeds found wide-open cutters.  SDC took game 2 by a score of 17-1 and ensured the team a place in the championship round.  SDC also got a chance to extend a hand of friendship to the Japanese team, outfitting the whole team in SDC sunglasses which made for the perfect #maholler13 photo.

Day 2 brought the championship rounds.  Game 3, the first semifinal, pitted SDC against the Hawaii A-Team, Wahine Mana.  Mana came out flying, dominating the draw and scoring a few quick goals.  The first half saw SDC pitted in their own end as they adjusted to the increased level of play.  Fantastic goalkeeping kept the team in the game, and at half SDC found themselves down 4-2.  After a chance to regroup, SDC came out flying in the second half, switching up the draw and driving to net, fighting for 50-50 balls, and playing well with long possessions.  The defense shut the door and the team outscored Mana 7-1 in the second half, coming out on top 9-5 and booking a return trip to the final.

Game 4 and the championship game rolled in a 1pm local time.  The game would be a rematch of last year's final against Seattle's Breakaway, and SDC and Breakaway have been battling it out for years at different tournaments on the west coast circuit.  However, Breakaway got the upper hand and showed off their potent attack, burying several bounce-shot goals before SDC could get on the board.  SDC never gave up though, and fought back several times but ran out of time and fell 15-7 to the 5-time Hawaii Tournament champions.

SDC closed out its tournament rocking their team costume - Disney Princesses!  The team featured everyone from Tinkerbell to Ariel and even had a few villains - Captain Hook and Snow White's Evil Queen.  With that, we close out another successful Hawaii tournament, Mahalo, Aloha, and #MAHOLLER13!  SDCLaxOhana!
