Knott Scores Game Winner at 3:05 of First OT

It was a historic night of firsts for the Warriors of Webb High School.  The Northwood High School Chargers came to play, and the two teams put on a show for the ages, as the Warriors vanquished the Chargers 4-3 in overtime, for their first win and first overtime win in program history.

The Warriors got on the board first just 3 minutes and 35 seconds into the first quarter when junior attacker Matt Knott took a feed from sophomore midfielder Matt Roach and unloaded for the first goal of the game.  The Warriors would have to wait for their next chance, however, as they would not score again until the fourth quarter.  In that time, the Chargers dropped three unanswered in on Webb, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime and landing a goal in the fourth quarter.  The defense, lead by juniors Tyler Eller (who soaked three or four shots alone in the body) and Zach Barnes, clamped down on the Chargers, allowing them only 8 shots on goal in the first half and 4 in the second half.  When the Chargers did manage to get a shot off, freshman goalie Christian Tilley was equal to the task, stopping 9 shots on the day.  In the fourth quarter, down 3-1, the offense settled things down and again it was Roach, this time finding Gibson Gillespie as he darted across the box, who rifled it home to make it 3-2 Northwood.  Then, with time winding down, Webb put their trust into  Landon “The Bulldozer” Williams, as he took the ball and drove his massive frame to the net, burying the third and game tying goal to send it to overtime.

In overtime, it was the Warriors who were up two men due to two infractions from the Chargers.  The face off was won by senior Michka Olhasque, who took it down and helped set the offense up for a shot, which was sent wide and backed up by the Warriors.  After several failed shooting attempts, Roach found Olhasque up top, who dished it down to Knott, who subsequently fired home the game winner at 3:05 of the first overtime to give the Black and Red their first ever victory.

“I thought tonight was a great lacrosse game between two first year programs,” said Coach David Farabee, fresh off his first career coaching victory.  “Both teams were aggressive and physical, and I think the fans who came got a taste of what makes lacrosse such a great sport.  I could not be happier or prouder of our young men as they win the first game (of hopefully many) in the history of the JF Webb lacrosse program.  Again our defense and goalie play was strong;  tonight, however, we made important strides offensively.  We put the ball on cage more and are beginning to put more pressure on the opponent’s defense.  Matt Knott’s game winning goal in sudden death overtime was outstanding.  This is a great game and we are having a great time.”

Matt Knott finished the game leading all goal scorers with two goals, and Landon Williams and Gibson Gillespie each added a score, while Matt Roach had two assists on the night, and Michka Olhasque would add and assist while teaming up with fellow senior Cam Fuller to win 9 of the 11 face-offs.  The Warriors take the field again Tuesday, March 9th against Burlington (Walter M.) Williams High School at 6:00 pm for the third of the Warriors’ four game homestand to begin the season.  Come support your Webb Lacrosse Team!
