Gillespie Improves Scoring Streak to Five Games

Despite the improved play from last night’s performance, the Webb Warriors fell to Orange High School 13-2 at OHS.  The loss drops Webb to 2-3 (0-1, Con-4) and moves Orange up to 3-2 (0-2, Con-5).  The Warriors got goals on the night from Gibson Gillespie, who improves his scoring streak to 5 games by receiving senior Matt Heintz’s first assist of the year and burying the shot, and ‘Dozer Williams, tallying his fourth goal of the year in his traditional run-you-over fashion.  Both goals were scored in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead momentarily, before Orange scored several more goals by game’s end.

Defensively, the quad of poles (Eller, Terry, Jones, and Barnes) played much better tonight, despite the score, and forced Orange to take many ill advised shots and to finally just try getting to the crease to score.  In goal, Christian Tilley and Larry Hester teamed up for 17 saves.  Tilley made 12 through two and a half quarters of play, before being removed due to injury and being relieved by Hester, who played admirably, giving up only 5 goals and making 5 saves in his first game appearance.

“Despite the score, I was pleased with our effort tonight against Orange,” said Coach Farabee after the tough lose.  “I did not think our team played partciularly well against Roxboro Community School, and I was anxious to see how we would respond after that defeat.  The players showed tonight that they did learn from that loss, returning to the intensity and smarter play that helped them to the two earlier victories.  We are still an extremely young team, and every game gives us the chance to learn and grow.”

The Warriors are at home for their next game Tuesday, March 23rd against Northern Durham High School, another Conference 4 opponent.  The Black and Red are looking for their first ever conference victory, hoping to get it against the Knights.  Face-off is set for 6:30 pm.  Come out and support your Warriors!
