Gillespie Nets First Hat Trick in School History, Roach Assists on Four, Scores Two

Gibson Gillespie scored a hat trick, and Matt Roach added 4 assists as the Black and Red rolled to an 8-4 victory over the Burlington Williams Bulldogs at the football stadium Tuesday night.  It was the first of what hope to be many more hat tricks in Webb Lacrosse’s young history.

The Warriors got the scoring started early in the 1st quarter, as Matt Knott took a feed from Matt Roach and drilled home his first of two goals on the evening, giving Roach the first of his soon to be four assists, just a minute and 29 seconds into the first quarter.  Webb and Burlington would go scoreless for nearly 15 minutes, before the Warriors again put a goal in at 7:47 of the second quarter.  They would add a third goal merely a minute and a half later, before the Bulldogs found the back of the cage (a rarity for them on the night) at 5:25 of the second.  Webb then added a 4th goal just two minutes later, before going into halftime with a 4-1 lead.

Webb started the second half scoring again at 7:15 and would add a second goal to give them an insurmountable 6-1 lead going into the 4th quarter.  Burlington Williams, however, didn’t want to go quietly, as they added goals two and three to make it a 6-3 lead with just 5 minutes and 51 seconds left in the game.  When it seemed as though the Bulldogs were getting back into the game, the hard-nosed defensive play from Webb’s close defenders, lead by junior Tyler Eller, the orchestrator of several crushing blows on the night, shut the Bulldogs attack down.  Within a minute, the Warriors responded to this cut in lead, adding their 7th goal of the night before Roach, who already by this point had a goal and 4 assists, would open fire from the top of the box and make it 8-3.  The Bulldogs kept their rally going by adding a 4th goal on the game, but time expired before it could get beyond that.

“Tonight was another great effort by our lacrosse team.  I thought our defense was again outstanding, with Christian Tilley being solid in the goal and our close defense (Tyler Eller, Holden Jones, Zach Barnes, and Rufus Terry) continuing to be extremely physical,” said Coach Farabee.  “Each game our offense has improved and tonight was no different.  We are getting more quality shots on cage and beginning to find the back of the net.  Matt Knott continues to be a leader offensively, but is now getting help from Gibson Gillespie, Landon Williams, and Matt Roach.  Gibson set a program standard with his hat trick tonight, the first hat trick in our team’s history, and Matt has established himself as the feeder of the offense with those assists tonight, while Landon keeps using his strong body to push defenders backwards and drive hard to the net.  We will need to continue to work hard and improve all areas of our play as we begin conference play this Friday night at home against a traditionally strong Durham Jordan program.  This will be a good test for our team, allowing us to see where we are in our development.”

Matt Roach lead all point scorers with 2 goals and 4 assists, while Gibson Gillespie (3 goals) and Matt Knott (2 goals, 1 assist) added three points each, and “Bulldozer” Williams continued his scoring streak along with his fellow Warriors by adding a goal.  In net, Christian Tilley continued to be a nightmare for opposing teams, making 12 saves on the night, completely blanketing anything but the closest shots the Bulldogs could muster.  The next game is Friday, March 12th, against the Durham Jordan HS Falcons, the first Conference-4 opponent for the Warriors.  Game time is set for 6:30 pm.  Everyone come out and support your Warriors against this tough, regional powerhouse of a foe!
