“Between a Rock and a Hard
Place”
Imagine you are a high school athlete and you come home from a practice
or a game and your parents start telling you how incompetent your coach
is. Now you love and respect your parents and so you have to listen to
them. Now, as a high school athlete you are placed in a real dilemma. You
have a coach that works with you each and every day, a coach that expects you
to do things the way that you are coached. You know if you do not listen
to the coach and perform the way you are instructed, then you will not get the
chance to compete. But you know the coach is incompetent because your parents
told you so.
Parents please do not put your student-athlete in this predicament,
because they cannot win. If they listen to you belittle the coach and buy
into that, then they will not respect the coach. If they do not respect
the coach and perform as instructed, then they will not compete. Please
do not put your student-athlete between a rock and a hard place, because
ultimately the student-athlete will be the one who suffers. Let the young
people enjoy their high school experiences. Support the program, support
the coach, and it can be a “win-win” situation.
Respectfully,
Mike Cloy Athletic Director
