Maggie AkerSanta Barbara, CA - The Gauchos outscored 12th ranked Texas 7-2 in the second half to distance themselves from the Longhorns and improve to 5-0 overall on the season.  Sophomore Megan Dawe (Martinez, CA) led all scorers with 3 goals and 2 assists. UCSB was up 4-3 at intermission but outshot Texas 19-9 in the first half. The Longhorn goalie had 12 of her 20 saves in the first half, frustrating UCSB shooters. Overall the Gauchos outshot Texas 32-12 but shot 34.4%.

Effort and enthusiasm was needed to make up for the over-achieving goal keeping from Texas and the Gauchos responded. Less than 2 minutes into the second half sophomore Meg Cruse (Encinitas, CA) took the ball away with a stick check on a Texas defender trying to clear the ball, scooped up the loose ball and sprinted uncontested 40 yards to fake and move the Texas goalie to notch a solo effort goal. The play sparked the Gauchos and they reeled off 4 more unanswered goals to make it a 6 goal run. That run started with a UCSB goal scored at the end of the first half when freshman Lindsay Remigio (Syosset, NY) passed to Dawe with 2:05 left in the first half. The Gauchos held Texas scoreless for 18 minutes in the middle of the game and that was what tipped the balance to get them the win.

A spread the ball around mentality was again a key for the UCSB offense. Eight players contributed at least a goal and an assist in the game against Texas. It's early in the season but 5 Gauchos already have 10 or more points on goals and assists while 12 players have contributed at least one point. That's with three of five opponents ranked 9th, 6th and 12th in the country. On defense senior Monora Seth (San Diego, CA) led the way with 3 ground balls and 4 caused turnovers.

UCSB is now 5-0 on the start of the season and faces 3rd ranked University of Colorado (3-0) at 1:00pm on the Rob Field Turf on Sunday in a continuation of their schedule at the 22nd Annual Santa Barbara Shootout Sponsored by Brine.
