UCSB at ArizonaTucson, AZ - The Gauchos opened the season on the road at University of Arizona and won 12-6 while outshooting the Wildcats 19-14. UCSB limited Arizona to 13 shots on goal and senior Megan Hughes (Tustin, CA) had 7 saves. The Gauchos got on the board first with an unassisted goal from senior Katie Hubbert (San Jose, CA) 15 seconds into the game. UCSB led the rest of the way with the Wildcats close at 3-2 at about the ten minute mark. Then the Gauchos outscored them 9-4 over the rest of the game. UCSB led 7-3 at halftime.

UCSB struck similarly quickly as in the first half to start the second half. Senior Samm Wilson (San Jose, CA) and junior Lori Marchildon (Haddonfield, NJ) combined on a nice give and go with Wilson giving it and then getting it back from Marchildon on her way to sticking it in the net. Everyone healthy played in the game for UCSB. The Gauchos have five players out with injuries and illness but the remaining 19 players were effective and played with spirit on the road. UCSB has a big team this year with 24 players and the depth allows for success even when starters are out of the action.

Senior Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) led all scorers with 6 goals & 1 assist while also getting 4 draw controls and 5 ground balls in the midfield. Junior Lindsay Alex (Santa Ana, CA) had 5 assists for UCSB. Two Gauchos won 7 loose balls. Freshman Maddy Montague (Aliso Viejo, CA) snared 4 draw controls and 3 ground balls. Freshman Claire Wilson (Healdsburg, CA) subbed in both halves and made the most of her time to win 3 draw controls and 4 ground balls for her team.

The Gauchos improve to 1-0 and play at Arizona State University in a 10:00am game on Sunday. Arizona drops to 0-1 and plays next on Friday at the Santa Barbara Shootout versus the club from University of Virginia.
