The No. 5 Bruins traveled north for a WWLL Central contest versus No. 6 UCSB and came out flat against a speedy Gaucho attack.  The Gauchos ran out to a 6-2 lead before the Bruin defense settled in and stepped up their pressure.  Goalie Devon Comito shut down free position attempts on consecutive Gaucho possessions and Seniors Allie Simpson and Morgan Oberstein steadied the offense, facilitating 5 of the 6 first half goals.

After starting the second half with a 10-6 deficit, the Bruins gave away back-to-back draws with false starts.  The Gauchos extended their lead to 13-6 before the Bruins stormed back with four straight goals, closing the gap to 13-10, but that was as close as they would get. Following an unforced error in the midfield by the Bruins, the Gauchos built on their lead against the extended Bruin defense to end the game with a 17-11 victory.

The Bruins struggled all game to capitalize on offensive opportunities, netting only 11 of 27 shots on goal against UCSB’s Jeni Center. Captain Isabel Angell took command on the defensive end, finishing the day with a season-high 3 caused turnovers and 7 ground ball controls. Junior Margaret Nettleton anchored the defensive pressure in the midfield with 2 caused turnovers and 4 ground ball controls.

The Bruins have one more week of practice before turning their focus back to the classroom as they head into finals.  After a two-week hiatus, the Bruins will travel to the Rocky Mountain State to face No. 10 Colorado and No. 4 Colorado State in a rematch of last year’s WCLA Division 1 National Title game.
