Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Mar. 25, 2018

Santa Cruz,CA- Freshman Goalie #24 Cameron Saechao recorded 31 saves vs. UC-Santa Cruz on Sunday breaking the All-Time SOU record for saves in one game.  The previous record was held by Connor Kelley (SOU'16) who recorded 26 saves on 5/19/16 vs. the Univeristy of Dayton Flyers at the MCLA National Championship Tournament.

SOU striked quickly against UCSC as #94 Connor Mason found #29 Spencer Pregal off of a set play just 58 seconds into the game.  SOU took a 2-0 lead just two minutes later as #11 Spencer Burch found #00 Jack Martin cutting in front of the goal.  UCSC would score just 28 seconds later to cut the lead 2-1.  5 minutes later UCSC tied the game at 2-2 as #8 for the Slugs scored again.  The Raiders would score 3 goals in the final 4 minutes of the 1st to take a 5-2 lead.

Santa Cruz really controlled the 2nd qt. of the game possessing the ball and not allowing SOU even one shot.  #24 Saechao almost single handedly held on to the lead for the Raiders as he recorded 15 saves in the 2nd qt.

The 3rd qt. was all Slugs as they outscored SOU 5-1 taking the lead 8-6 going into the 4th.  SOU's defense stiffened a bit in the 4th but the Slugs continued to control the ball not allowing SOU's offense to regain the momentum which they had in the 1st qt.   The bright spot for the Raiders in the 4th came when Senior Defense men #12 Zach Humphrey scored his first career goal.

Final score was 10-7 in favor of Santa Cruz.

Next up for SOU is a first time matchup against UC-Irvine on Tuesday at 1pm at the Morgan Hill Sports Complex.

Congrats to #24 Cameron Saechao for breaking a record in only his Freshman Season!!
