Another week, another ranked opponent for the Sonoma State Seawolves Lacrosse team. Stanford University who is ranked 15th in the nation came to town for a crucial WCLL game for both teams. Due to the heavy rains all week in Rohnert Park the game was played at Novato High School.

Sonoma jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after goals by Zach Blackman and Kyle Riddle. However, Stanford fought back and eventually took a 3-2 lead as the first quarter came to an end.

The second quarter started off with a Matt D’angelo score to pull things even. Then Kevin Labelle ripped a low to high shot that sailed into the top corner of the goal to give the Seawolves the lead again. Sonoma kept the pressure on and goals by Ryan Heidrich and Casimir Morawski pushed Sonoma’s lead to 6-3 where it would stay until first half came to an end.

Stanford came out firing in the second half, scoring the first two goals of the half to make it a 6-5 game. Heidrich would add his second goal of the game to put the Seawolves up by two. Riddle would throw a sweet fake and then rip the back of the net to push Sonoma to another three-goal lead. Stanford would add a late goal to head into the fourth quarter down by two.

Stanford would score the first goal of the quarter to make it just a one goal game.  Blackman would add his second goal of the day on a shot that put Sonoma up 9-7. However, Stanford would not give up and they would score to once again make it a one-goal game. Heidrich would score his third goal of the game to make it a 10-8 game in favor of Sonoma. The two teams would trade goals and with the score at 11-9 Sonoma’s goalie Michael Clothier would come up huge as he has all year to shut down Stanford for the 11-9 Sonoma Victory.

With the win, Sonoma improves to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the WCLL. The Seawolves will play their final home game of the year in a WCLL game that will have affect on playoff seeding against University of California-Berkley.  Faceoff is Saturday, April 21st at 1pm.
