Rohernt Park, CA (Dec 21, 2011) - Sonoma State Men's Lacrosse is proud to announce the hiring of Matt Blamey as Assistant Coach.  Coach Blamey comes to Sonoma State after spending the last two years as the founder and head coach for Northern Virginia Community College's (NOVA) first ever NJCAA men's lacrosse program. Prior to NOVA, Blamey spent six years as the head varsity lacrosse coach at South Lakes High School in Reston, VA.

Coach Carl noted, "obviously we are happy to add someone of Coach Blamey's character to our program.  In the practices he attended in the fall his commitment to 'fundamentals first' was clear, as was his knowledge of nuances of defensive lacrosse. That said, we are looking forward to his insight into all aspects of the team, both on and off the field."  Coach Carl continued,   "Having two assistant coaches with collegiate head coaching experience definitely contributes to the strength of the Sonoma coaching staff."

Coach Blamey grew up playing defense just outside of Washington, DC, in Northern Virginia, Blamey earned multiple MVP honors as a captain for the Gar-Field high school lacrosse team.Blamey was selected First Team All-Conference three of his four years on Varsity, a two-time Virginia Commonwealth Games starter, and an All-Met nominee his senior year.

After graduating in 1996, Blamey continued his playing career as a defender and long-stick midfielder with the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. Blamey was recognized twice as the Liberty District Coach of the Year (’06 & ‘08) while with the South Lakes program.  In 2009, Blamey had the honor of coaching South Lakes High School’s first-ever US Lacrosse High School All-America selection.

In addition to his on field coaching, Blamey is the former goalie for Team America, a post-collegiate men’s box lacrosse team in the Metro Area Box Lacrosse League. In 2008, Team America was successful in capturing the MABLL Senior A Winter Championship. Currently Blamey lives in Cotati, CA with his family and is employed as the Director of New Media at Sports City.
