2011 Davis Tournament Recap
The Sonoma State Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to beautiful Davis, California for the annual Cal Aggie Lacrosse Invitational. The tournament featured ten teams from across the west coast. Sonoma was scheduled three games, two of which featured WCLL foes UC-Berkley and the Santa Clara University.
After an early morning bus ride, Sonoma faced off against the Golden Bears. The game started off with the teams trading goals, then Cal went on a three-goal run to end the half. Sonoma started the half off with a man up goal to pull the game within two. The game ended with another Cal goal to make the final 5-2. Sonoma had a hard time clearing the ball, which led to many Golden Bear opportunities. However, with a game right after on another field Sonoma couldn’t dwell too much on fixing the problems of the clearing game.
The second game of the day pitted Sonoma against former WCLL opponent University of Nevada-Reno. Sonoma jumped out to an 8-0 halftime lead which allowed lots of freshman and newcomers to gain valuable game experience. Reno was able to score an early goal to start the second half but Sonoma shut the door and cruised to a big victory.
Sonoma hoped to carry that momentum into the last game of the day, against WCLL rival, Santa Clara University. However, that momentum quickly vanished after Santa Clara scored the first three goals of the game. Sonoma was able to rally and score 4 goals to head into halftime ahead, 4-3. Sonoma continued the goal scoring with three goals in the second half to win the game 7-3.
Sonoma finished the tournament 2-1 and showed lots of hope for the rest of the fall ball schedule and the spring. Next week Sonoma travels to Moraga, California to face the St. Mary’s Gales. Thanks to all the fans who made the trip up to Davis, the team really appreciates it!
