Santa Clara Takes Down Cal Poly

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Apr. 12, 2008

Santa Clara traveled south to Cal Poly on Saturday for their final game of their 2008 regular season schedule. The Broncos trailed 6-5 at half but would ultimately return home with a 12-10 victory over the Mustangs on the Cal Poly's home field. Today's victory solidified the #2 seed for next weekend's WWLL playoffs and will set up a first round match up versus the #22 ranked, UC San Diego.

Senior captain Lindsay Campbell opened Saturday's contest with an unassisted goal after just 41 seconds into regulation.  Campbell, in her final regular season game, would eventually net 3 goals and one assist as a leading contribution for Broncos today.  Cal Poly would tie the game at 1-1 four minutes after Campbell's goal.  However, sophomore Krista Shaw answered CP's goal with two goals of her own to give the Broncos a 3-1 lead.  Shaw would finish the day with an impressive 5 goals on the day.  Despite the Broncos early success versus the Mustangs, the Broncos struggled to find their tempo throughout the first half and ultimately trailed 6-5 at half.

After trailing 6-5 at half, the Broncos carried their sluggish play into the early portion of the first half by giving up the first three goals of the 2nd half.  Now down 9-5 with 25:37 remaining in the game, the Broncos called a quick but beneficial timeout.  After the timeout, the Broncos answered Cal Poly's three goal run with a seven goal run of their own that would put the Mustangs away for good.  With the lead back in the Bronco's hands at 12-9, the Broncos controlled possession for the final nine minutes until the Mustangs would score their final goal with just 14 second remaining.

Again, the Broncos will face UC San Diego on Saturday morning for the first game of the WWLL Playoffs.  The winner will face the winner of the #3 Cal Poly vs #6 Chico State game.
