The Santa Clara Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to beautiful Davis, California for the annual Cal Aggie Lacrosse Invitational. The tournament featured ten teams from across the west coast. Santa Clara had three games on the docket, two of which featured WCLL foes Chico State and Sonoma State.

After an early morning drive, Santa Clara faced off against the Gaels of St. Mary’s College looking to avenge the 6-5 loss from a year ago.  The Broncos wasted no time erasing that memory by jumping out to a 3-0 lead before halftime and never looking back.  SCU added 6 more tallies before the Gaels could notch the scoreboard for their lone goal with little more than a minute left in the game. The game ended with a 9-1 SCU win.  Santa Clara showed both poise on offense and a smothering defense to limit the touches for St. Mary’s.  However, with a game right after on a far field, Santa Clara couldn’t bask in the glory of the victory, having to get refocused for a divisional foe.

In the second game of the day, Santa Clara against WCLL Division 1 rival Chico State who was sporting an enormous youthful roster for the tournament.  The Wildcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but SCU battled back to notch the score at 3-3 at halftime.  Freshman goalkeeper, Jake Barz stepped up in the second half making 3 big saves, leading the way to a 5-4 victory, a 2-0 record on the day and a much needed rest/food break.

Santa Clara had hopes for a weekend sweep entering the last game of the day against divisional rival Sonoma State. Santa Clara scored the first three goals of the game and looked like they were in control early. Sonoma changed their goalie and was able to rally and score 4 goals to head into halftime ahead, 4-3.  Sonoma continued the goal scoring with three goals in the second half to win the game 7-3. SCU ran out of gas which showed the difference in 4-5 weeks of practice versus 4-5 days of practice.  The Broncos will be ready in the spring to meet the Seawolves again.

Santa Clara finished the tournament 2-1 and showed lots of hope for the rest of the fall ball schedule.  Offensively, outstanding performances were had by Freshman Joey Coleman with 4 goals and 3 assists and Sophomore Alex Walkingshaw, 4-1; Robby Inch 2-2, AJ Von Massenhausen, 3-1 and senior Joe O’Brien, 2-1. In addition to Barz in goal (11-saves, 8 Goals against) the defense was led by defenders senior Matt Baker and freshman CJ Toy.

Next week SCU hosts the St. Mary’s Gaels on the newly turfed Bellomy field at 11 AM. Thanks to all the parents and fans that made the trip up to Davis, the team really appreciates it!
